The Rolling Meadows Naval & Military Museum is one of the oldest naval museums in the United States. It was founded in 1892 by Rear Admiral John A. Steedman and Commodore James W. Wilkinson as the Naval and Military Museum of Illinois, with a collection of artifacts from the Illinois Navy. The museum moved to its current location on the West Side of Chicago in 1916, and added an air-defense radar installation in 1959. In 1990, it became a national affiliate member of the American Association for Marine Conservation (AAMC). Today, it houses both military and naval exhibits as well as a library with over 100,000 items on maritime history.
