Rolling Meadows is located to the north of the Chicago Loop. The Village of Rolling Meadows was organized in 1891 and named after Rollin' Meadows near Lexington, Kentucky. In 1903 it became a city with a population of 10,000 under Mayor John A. Byrne and then 15,000 under Mayor George Wickersham when it merged into the City of Chicago on January 1, 1955. The economic center of Rolling Meadows is its large shopping district which includes several independent retail stores as well as several big box stores such as Sears and JCPenney along with numerous service businesses including banks and restaurants. Rolling Meadows is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was organized on December 4, 1871, from parts of Hyde Park and Morris Heights. The original name for Rolling Meadows was "Hinckley", after Major General Nathan Hinckley of the Union army who fought during the American Civil War. In 1881, Rolla Wofford became one of the first women to vote in Cook County when she registered to vote in Rolling Meadows. The village had its start as a small farming community with a few houses and a schoolhouse located near where present-day North Avenue and West Side Highway meet today. early settlers were John Ahern (1811–1875), Owen Casey (1798–1864), Michael Casey (1800–1868), George Maher (1792–1865) and Lemuel Hennepin (1809–1894). For many years it was thought that Hennepin may have been the first settler in what would become Rolling Meadows. In 1871, John Matson established himself as an agriculturalist by founding what would become his largest farm: three hundred acres of land on which he grew corn, beans, peas and other vegetables; five Monsanto woolen mills; two sawmills; four cow sheds; three barns; one blacksmith shop; two private schools -one for boys only where Mr. Matson served as superintendent until his death in 1913 and one for girls only where Mrs. Matson taught until her death also in 1913 - all situated around his large home on North Avenue east of center between Third Street and Main Street today known simply as "Matson's Farm". The Village took its name from then-President Ulysses S Grant's favorite military general: Nathan Hinckley who fought during the American Civil War on the Union side under General Grant's command at Pemberton Hill near Cairo Illinois while General Sherman led Confederate forces against President Abraham Lincoln's forces at Chickamauga Ridge north Georgia According to local legend Mr Eastman donated $5 worth of silverware to be placed inside each house starting with 1st July 1870 so that every family could have their own silver spoon beginning with their own birthdays! Later residents include Jno Gates(b 1865), Fannie Kapp(b 1865), Harry Kappe(b 1879), Julius Mueller(b 1893)and Anna Mueller(b 1897). Anna Mueller moved here from Lockport Indiana when her family took up permanent residence here after living westwardly on Long Island since their arrival there about 1800 A full description of all these people can be found nowhere but within individual families themselves so I will not try including them here except to note that they are all buried together at Lockport Cemetery along side other members of their families! A post office operated under this name until 1893 when it changed to "Merton" due to heavy namesake competition among neighboring villages having taken similar names such as Hinckley(), Springfield®, Morton(), Cicero®, Englewood®, Morton Heights®, Rockford Hills® etcetera . In 1907 new mail facilities were erected adjacent toVillage Hall making use both an old post office building on 3rd St NE which had been used previously by several different villages before being replaced by Hall predecessor also built 1903-1907 & destroyed by fire in 1970 . Today just outside Village limits is still standing - albeit slightly damaged - an interesting remnant from those days !! !
