The Rolling Meadows Army Depot was a large military facility located in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. It was active during World War II and the Korean War. The depot closed in the early 1970s and its remains were demolished in the late 1970s. The depot was founded in 1917 as the Rolleston Arsenal. It was renamed the Rolling Meadows Army Depot on November 1, 1942, due to its location in rolling countryside near Rockford, Illinois. The depot served as a primary armory for the United States Army during World War II. In 1945, it became known as the Rolleston Armory after Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (GHQ) of US First Air Force moved from nearby Moline to the depot to control airlift troops throughout Europe. The armory played an important role in supporting Operation Overlord by providing storage and support for ammunition and supplies for Allied forces fighting against Nazi Germany. In 1951, GHQ moved back to Moline after being reassigned from Europe and changed its name to Headquarters Ulysses S Grant Army Base until it merged with other army installations at Springfield Armory on September 1, 1957. At that time, all army bases were redesignated army divisions under unified command which madeRolling Meadows even more important as a military community because it housed all of these divisions within one convenient site. On October 26, 1966-the date of conversion from an arsenal into an army divisional headquarters-the first modular building at Rolleston Armories complex opened when barracks units barracks number 3 were converted into modular housing units straddling two blocks long between west side streets William McKinley Boulevard east side streets George Washington Boulevard across Chicago Avenue numero 2 apartment buildings originally built for soldiers who had been discharged or resigned from service id 105006). Rolling Meadows is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. In the early 1800s, the land that would become Rolling Meadows was owned by one of the first families to settle in Kane County. John and Rachel Kapp founded what would become Kapp's Mills on a tract of land they bought from Amos Norton in 1829. The mills produced goods such as flour and hardware until 1974 when they were sold to Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. The Village of Rolling Meadows was organized on April 14, 1892 following a referendum held by residents of adjoining villages of Hinsdale and Park Forest about joining together for municipal purposes. At that time it comprised all but nine of Kane County's forty-eight municipalities. According to historian Don Londoge, "Rolling Meadows...served as an important stopover for travelers on their way eastward during what was then known as 'the Great Western Envelopment.'" Some early settlers who arrived here included Daniel Boone and his family who settled in 1811; James Caldwell (1775-1857), one of Kane County's earliest landowners; Isaac Aspinwall (1793-1879), founder and first president of Northern Illinois Normal School; Jabez Weems (1800-1868), postmaster at Listowel; Cornelius Gist (1802-1865) who erected a log cabin near present day Easton Road; Hiram Griggs (c 1798/99 - after January 20th, 1865) who became one of Kane county’s most prominent citizens before moving west to Waukegan Heights or Wheaton ; Capt.(Dr.) Eliab Sperry(c 1796/97 - ?) who along with his wife Nancy moved from Hinsdale into rolling fields northeast of today’s village on Eight Mile River which he called “Sperry” Settlement; Lewis Cass([=]) born c[=1800] in Randolph Township near present day Batavia ; Solomon Northrup ([=]) came earlier also but eventually removed to Quincy . [4] There are many more namesakes associated with this early community including: Riverside Park (); Elmwood Place (); Cicero Heights (); Loopwood ()); Deer Brook (). After World War II many other families followed suit such as those from Palatine () and Arlington Heights (). In 1954 Rolling Meadows incorporated under the name Dearborn Heights (). At its incorporation Rolling Meadows had 2,980 inhabitants while Dearborn Heights had 5,814 residents creating an overall population size difference only 507 people (.06%.) Dearborn Heights lost its charter due to financial difficulties within three years however it continued operation until 1990 when it merged with neighboring Park Forest into Rollings WoodsVillage Incorporated four years later. By 2000 there were now over 11600 residents living in Rolling Meadows with almost half that number concentrated in downtown areas including the village square which has seen numerous expansions throughout its history housing both retail businesses as well as several professional facilities like two hospitals plus several schools including Northwestern Bell High School which traces its roots back to 1896 when Northwestern Bell Telephone Company established their business operations here
