Rockford is a city in the Illinois River Valley of north central Illinois, United States. The population was 61,574 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-largest city in Illinois and one of its seven major metropolitan areas. Rockford's nickname is "The City of Steel." Rockford was originally called Peoria by the Indians; it was renamed for Richard Stockton, 2nd Viscount Auckland (1768–1828) on July 16, 1836. On November 16, 1845, it became part of the newly created state of Michigan as part of that state's western boundary. The original town site was located on what is now Shaw Road east of present-day Park Avenue and west of State Street between L streets and First Streets. It had a population of 1,500 people in 1847 when it became a village charter member with headquarters at 5 Masonic halls on Dearborn Street. In February 1850, following Indian removal to Oklahoma Territory, Rockford's first post office opened at 3 Masonic Halls after being donated by James Hogg from his home near Harper Station on Ottawa County Road 20 northwest of Ottawa Lake. In December 1860 Rockford voted to secede from Indiana and become an independent republic under Chicago Mayor John Prentice Steele (1835–1915). On January 14th 1861 an ordinance creating a new city hall Building No. 2 went into effect while Post Office No. 1 continued to serve as the interim facility until May 15th when that building burned down following an arson attempt against its occupants by local citizens who were incensed over high taxes levied against them by Steele’s administration. After weekslong investigation that included secret hearings before both houses of the legislature he reluctantly pardoned all offenders including those convicted thereof but refused to renew Post Office privileges which would have allowed people to mail parcels directly from their homes without stopping at their local post offices first). This led to increased mail fraud among residents who could now easily counterfeit postage stamps or purchase goods without paying for them with real stamps then return them undelivered or even worse use fake postal notes intended for Internal Revenue agents instead) One result was increasing business opportunities for organized crime syndicates operating out Of Chicago such as The Herculean taskmasters Gangsters International Syndicate which controlled most illicit drug trafficking routes through Detroit and other Midwestern cities during this period along with numerous rackets involving railroad companies such as The Chicago Northern Railroad Company headquartering operations out Of Rockford until its acquisition by Northern Pacific Railroad in 1945 resulting in widespread job losses throughout northern Midwest businesses large & small associated with railroads during this time period

By 1915, however,Rockford's economic fortunes had begun to decline as World War I began to impact America negatively; after hostilities ended in 1918, business slowly improved but never recovered until the Great Depression hit in 1930. Despite this setbacks, Rockford has continued to be a major cultural focus throughout most of recent history; in particular, it is known for its music industry (the city has been home to several prominent recording artists including The Chicago Cubs' Sammy Sosa and Michael Jackson), Wrestling (particularly Heavyweight Champion Rocky Flair from Illinois), annual summertime events such as Illini-Hawkeyes football games or "Stampede Days", and Butterfield Park – which is home to one of the largest amusement park complexes in North America.
