Rockford is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,827 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the largest city east of Chicago. Rockford's economy consists largely of manufacturing, with a small amount of service and retail sectors. The City of Rockford is one of the few cities in Illinois without a major metropolitan area; it is instead surrounded by rural counties. The first people to live here were the Potawatomi people who lived along the Fox River for about 10,000 years before moving west to what is now Springfield. In 1795, General Anthony Wayne founded Detroit as an outpost on lands that later became Rockford. Other early settlers included John Bugbee, who built a mill on the river at what is now Union Pointe Shopping Center; Elijah White; Isaac Nolen; George Stephenson; John Pemberton; and Jeremiah Dixon all from New England. In 1824, Ulysses S. Grant foundered his ship "Cimarron" off Rockford Harbor while exploring Lake Michigan for new land grants and decided to settle in this area instead because he thought it would be easier to get around than most other places he had looked at. He named his new settlement after himself – Grantville – but no one moved there until 1841 when James Krieger arrived from Ohio with his family and started harvesting corn on nearby Kickapoo Prairie north of town today’s UIUC campus (Krieger’s farm still stands). The first post office in this area was established in 1842 at Albion Hill just south of where present day North Avenue meets University Drive (now State Street). The first store opened here was James Krieger’s Store which operated from 1842-1845 under license from Vincennes Post Office[1]. This period also saw some heavy industry development including: grist mills (of which only two remain), livery stables/drivers' quarters for local farmers (later replaced by motels), brick kilns for making bricks for buildings (a product that continues to be made today), wagon wheel manufacturers located near present day Winnebago Road and Old Highway 606, three tannery farms located southwest of town near Present Day Railroad Road #3,[2],[3] five blacksmith shops across town during this time period,[4][5] four breweries[6] three printing presses,[7][8],[9][10] two shoe factories(the last being closed down in 1922)[11]), four schools(one high school was actually built concurrent with UIUC[12]), six churches variously called First Presbyterian Zion Chapel or Methodist Episcopal Church[13], over 100 businesses operating during this time period totaling 2 million bushels of grainfilled sacks shipped through neighboring towns to these several sites.[14](fn1) On October 11th 1840 Rev Solomon Hanks organized what would become known as “First Presbyterian Zion Chapel” which served as both worship center and social hall until 1863 when services were moved into Trinity United Methodist Church on First Street northwest of town starting May 1st 1865 [15]. Reverend Hanks preached there until his death in 1893….. In 1843 Amos Stroudt arrived bringing over 50 acres surrounding current day Ives Mill Site withinrockfontown township boundaries according to property deed dated November 15th 1850 between him & others…. By 1860 Amos had laid out lots withinpresent day Winnebago Township limits according To map thereof Attachedthereunto & erected houses thereon…. All properties herein described have passed thru several hands since their origination….. On July 12nd 1870 Samuel Bader purchased lots east side of village limits from Amos Stroudt (& adjoining lot No 9)… After purchasing said lots Bader laid out homesites therein beginning about 1870…. Before 1880 residences on said site consisted mostly Of Log cabins....................................................................... By 1890 most residents living onsite had left dueTo increasing competition from more developed areas………………………….. Most residents remaining relocated by 1920 away from downtown towards former villages location & vicinity………………….. By 1930 only 3 homes remained on site…. At present only one home remains…………......... By 1990 only 2 homes remain…………………..Today Rockford has a population density greater than any other Uptown Chicago suburb……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. The first coffee beans were roasted in Arabia about 8,000 years ago. Coffee was traded between India and Arabia for goods such as weapons and spices. The coffee trade dried up after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1453. However, traders from Europe continued to trade with Arabia until the end of the 18th century. In 1795, a group of Italian entrepreneurs set out to bring coffee culture to Italy. They traveled through Arab countries and tasted many different types of coffee before arriving in Rome in 1796. With this introduction of Italian coffee culture, espresso (a type of coffee) began to be enjoyed by Italians throughout Europe. In 1814, Nicholas-Jacques Conte patented a process for harvesting beans that allowed for better quality control over the crop. This gave rise to the Cafeteria movement which aimed to improve working conditions at cafes. In 1886, Dutchman Philips Roederer became interested in Coffee and started importing Turkish Moka Wafers from Indonesia into Netherlands. Roederer's efforts led to Dutchmen becoming interest in developing their own coffeeshops and today roasting great cups of Sumatra-style coffee all over the world!
Some of the earliest coffee beans were grown in Ethiopia. In 1795, one man, Jabir al-Asad, started a small farm in Addis Ababa and grew coffee. The first cup of espresso was brewed at his house in 1805.
Rockford is a city in the county of Rockford, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,811 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and Cook County. It is also one of the seven cities in Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Rockford was John Stephenson. He built a log cabin on the present site of downtown on November 12, 1824. A post office called "Rochester" was established in 1827, and it remained in operation until 1881. Rockford's first mayor was James Caldwell (1830-35). Other early mayors were Moses Greenwood (1839-41), Jonathan Mather (1845-49), Abram Brownell (1851-55), and Ebenezer Julius Sibley (1857-59). In 1871, Leland Stanford laid out a plan for what would become Stanford University on land east of town center near Southport Road and West Willard Avenue. The cornerstone for the university's Main Building was laid by President Abraham Lincoln on July 4, 1870; construction began two weeks later and ended three months later after only 44 days of work. The original main building—now known as Old Main—was completedcosting $2 million to build; it cost $500 per acre to lotize land for it. It became an educational powerhouse during its early years with more than 25 faculty members and nearly 700 students when it opened in October 1872; enrollment peaked at 1,200 students in 1896 but then declined as Stanford shifted its focus to Albemarle Hall on campus south of town. By 1920–21 enrollment had fallen to about 600 students due largely to World War Iimposed budget restraints; however, it increased rapidly following World War II due to GI benefits which led Stanford to reevaluate its priorities and open new buildings such as Graduate School of Business Administration and Law School withinStanford Stadium across from campusSQL Server 2008 R2
Rockford was founded in 1837 by John Dearborn and his brother, Amos. The town was named for the rock that is located near the original site of Rockford. The Dearborn brothers were entrepreneurs who developed a small cattle farm in what is now the hamlet of Winfield. They began to trade goods with other villages in central Illinois and built a trading post on the land that became Rockford. In 1846, they married their first wife, Sarah Rea, and started a family. By 1870, they had acquired more than 1,000 acres (500 hectares) of land around thetown center. In 1887, they donated land to build the first high school in Illinois. The Dearborn High School building still stands today and is one of Rockford's most iconic landmarks.
