Rock Island is a city in Rock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,609 at the 2010 census. It is the main town of Rock Island County and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first city on the current site of Rock Island was founded in 1833 by farmers from Essex County, Connecticut. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Des Plaines River and its access to shipbuilding and other commercial activities on Lake Michigan. By 1847, Rock Island had a population of 10,000 people. In 1857–1858, after a dispute with adjacent Naperville over land ownership near what is now Naperville Heights Park, a group of six Iowa men organized as a company called "The Republican Party" to purchase 1/2 mile (1 km) of landowning French Canadian Pierre-Edouard Lajoie for $5 per acre (0·24 ha). In 1861, Lajoie sold his share in the company to John Pritzker for $50 per acre (1·8 ha). The new ownership created tension between Pritzker's family and those from Iowa; however, conflict ended when Pritzker donated all his assets to charity before his death in 1865. After purchasing 1/2 mile (1 km) of land from Lajoie for $5 per acre (0·24 ha), John Pritzker organized what became known as "Pritzker Land Company". This company developed an agricultural product industry that persists to this day: various types of corn are grown here including maize meal (), Debt peas (), flour () and potatoes (). Other crops such as cotton were also grown but these have since been replaced by non-GMO varieties. After nearly fifty years as an agricultural center providing jobs for many locals and contributing significantly to local economic development, agriculture has become less important economically during recent decades while manufacturing has become more pervasive on the local landscape
The first white settlers in what is now Rock Island, Illinois arrived from Indiana in 1809. They were Methodist missionaries, and their mission was to establish a Protestant church on the site of present-day Carbondale. The original white residents were farmers and traders who built log cabins, hunted game, and collected water rights from the river that flows through the area. The first school for students in this area was built in 1814. In 1824, the U.S. government moved an encampment of Native Americans living on this tract of land known as Fort Dearborn eastward along the river to what is now Peoria County. The fort served as a military post until it was abandoned in 1829 after being destroyed by Indian attackers. This event helped start the development of Peoria County as an agricultural center. In 1830, Congress approved a bill designating Rock Island as part of Illinois Territory because it had been claimed by both Minnesota and Iowa under treaties made during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). In 1847, when Illinois became a state, the territory included all of modern-day Rock Island and neighboring counties including Cook County to the south; parts of rural Kane County to the north; and parts of St Clair County to the west. On July 1, 1850, Carbondale became one of four cities in Illinois (the others being Chicago, Altona Heights/Altona Township/Allis Park/Belleville), due largely to its location at or near one end of Lake Michigan Avenue – which made it easily accessible by stagecoach from Milwaukee or other points east or west over Lake Michigan
