Rock Island, Illinois is a small town located in St. Joseph County, Illinois. The population was 3,687 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the city of Chicago to the north, Rockford to the east, Danville to the south, and Plainfield to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Rock Island was John Deere in 1837. The town was organized on October 25 of that year. The first school was built in 1840 and named for General Harrison Hawkburne who had helped organize Illinois into a state. A store opened in 1843 and became an important local center for trade and commerce. In 1845 a post office was established and remained in operation until it closed in 1953. In 1870 Rock Island became one of eighteen townships within St. Joseph County when that county was created from parts of McLean County, Illinois. That same year saw significant growth as railroads were constructed through central Illinois connecting Chicago with other markets around the world via Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin. As railroad shipments increased so did job demand for men living near these new industries and businesses sprung up all around town including several large textile mills which soon attracted waves of immigrants from eastern Europe seeking work on American soil- many lacking any formal education or experience with English language families back home such as those who arrived on Ellis Islandbeckonedominated "the lost generation".
