The history of the Rock Island Infantry Regiment dates back to 1846. The regiment was formed from a group of men who had left the Union army at Fort Dearborn in Illinois after the war's end. After several years of service, the regiment was mustered into the Union army on November 3, 1861. When Illinois became a state in 1868, the regiment was re-raised and again mustered into service on December 8th. The unit participated in various campaigns during the late 1860s and early 1870s before being deployed to Missouri in May 1871 as part of General John C. Frémont's campaign against Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The regiment fought at Battle of Pea Ridge and Battle of Bentonville while also taking part in other engagements such as Siege of Vicksburg and Battle of Wilson's Creek. After Frémont's death in1870, command passed briefly to Major General George Hurlbut before it eventually fell to Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton on October 17th, 1871. Fenton led his unit through numerous campaigns including victories at Champion Hill (July 12th), Second Bull Run (December 14th), First Bull Run (January 2nd), Wilderness (May 5th) and Bristoe Station (October 25th). He also helped lead an unsuccessful assault on Petersburg which cost his unit over 250 casualties. In September 1875, Fenton was transferred to Quebec City as commander of Canadian forces occupying that city following its fall to American forces under General Pierre Gourdoir de la Résistance et du Canadae et des Français since July 1st, 1875. During this time period, Rock Island Infantry Regiment suffered many losses including one officer killed/murdered while commanding company A during clashes with Ulysses S Grant's Expedition against Confederate forces near Corinth Mississippi on April 15th1876; two officers - Captains John Pemberton and Lewis Wimmer - also died during the expedition while serving with Company K; one enlisted man - Thomas Jansen - also lost his life whilst serving with Company I;Five other soldiers were discharged or mutinied for refusing orders home due to health problems connected with garrison duty; five more Soldiers served out their natural lives prior to disbanding or being discharged from military service due to various reasons including tuberculosis contracted while stationed abroad; three Soldiers committed suicide while serving with Regimental Battalion 1004.** * * *Inactive soldiers are not included within this statistic

The Rock Island Infantry Regiment was a regiment of the Union Army that served in the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on December 16, 1861, at Peoria, Illinois. It was mustered into service on February 15, 1862. The regiment fought in the Battles of Stone River and Chickamauga. The regiment was disbanded on October 6, 1865.
Rock Island is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1847 and named for General James K. Rockwell, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and had been appointed as a brigadier general in the Union army under Ulysses S. Grant. The first post office opened in 1848, and the first store was built on Main Street in 1849. By 1860, Rock Island consisted of just over a hundred residents and only two churches: one Congregationalist and one Catholic. In 1865, local farmers organized what became known as the "Iowa Farm League" to resist an upcoming railroads proposal that would have connected Rock Island with Des Moines, Iowa through Dodge City. The railroad's opponents used force—including vandalism of bridges—to keep it from reaching Rock Island; as a result, the town's importance declined until after World War II when it regained some steam because of its proximity to other industries such as shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing plants within Cook County. However, since 2000s there has been renewed interest in staying close to downtown Chicago due to its infrastructure improvements (e.g., new expressways) as well as its great location adjacent to McCormick Place which hosts large conventions/events each year like Comerica Park MLB games and United Center Blackhawks games (but away from Soldier Field). Today Rock Island is still home to many businesses including three banks - First National Bank of America, JB Hunt Financial Services Company LP and Wells Fargo & Co.—and four restaurants including Hardee's restaurant chain; all three are located on South Main Street next door to JB Hunt Financial Services Company LP’s headquarters building which also houses their sales depart

Rock Island is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, and the seat of Rock Island County. The population was estimated at 190,823 as of 2019. It is considered to be one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States, with a wide variety of cultures represented. The first permanent European settlement on what is now Rock Island was by French explorers in 1763. Rock Island was part of the Northwest Territory until it became a part of Illinois in 1803. In 1809, it become a county under the jurisdiction of Joliette County. The county was named for General James K. Polk, who had served as its first sheriff and then as its first governor from 1809-1815 and again from 1825-1829. On July 24, 1836, Rock Island became an act within Illinois to separate from Joliette County and become its own separate statutory entity known as "Rock Island County". During World War II, many rock industry workers were recruited from other nearby towns for work on shipyards or other war-related projects at such plants as Fox River Arsenal and Grumman Aircraft Company's Plant Nopark on Jacksonville Peninsula inland from Chicago; these sites are now included within the limits of Park Ridge neighborhood in Cook County (see also: Chicago neighborhoods). The city developed rapidly during this time because new transportation links were created through railroads: Rock Island Line Railroad opened in 1865; Union Pacific Railroad built a line between Racine and Chicago that connected with Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago; Midwestern Railway extended eastward to Garysburg; American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T) completed construction of its Longines Building on State Street adjacent to City Hall which became their corporate headquarters building after their acquisition by Bell Atlantic Corporation in 1986. In 1955–1956 when Interstate 90A was constructed concurrent with US Highway 90 running through town center just west of Lake Erie Boulevard/I-90B there was much development including multi-unit housing developments like Veterans Memorial Housing Authority located off I-90B southbound Exit 404 while Gurnee Mills Mall opened adjacent to I-90B exit 402 along with Sears Tower becoming Wisconsin's second tallest skyscraper after Burbank California's Burbank Airport tower (now 555 Wacker Drive). With rapid suburban growth following World War II many small businesses closed or merged into larger ones over time while others renovated or replaced older buildings throughout town center making it one continuous community vibrancy despite major changesover time
Rock Island was founded in 1833 by John Chilton. The town was named for the rock that is now located there. It became a central stopping point on the Illini Trail, and later served as the capital of Illinois. In 1849, Rock Island was combined with other nearby towns to form the city of Rock Island.
