From ancient times,Riverdale has been a place where people from all over came to trade and commerce. From the time of the Mayans, Riverdale was known for its rich resources and strategic location. The area was also home to some of the most important Native American cultures in the Midwest. The first Europeans to arrive in Riverdale were Dutch traders in 1608. They named the area after a large body of water called the Rock River, which they thought would provide good fishing grounds. Over time, other groups arrived, including French and English traders. In 1812, Illinois Territory was created from parts of Michigan Territory and Indiana Territory. In this new territory, Riverdale became part of what is now Kankakee County. In 1827, when Chicago was founded as a city by land speculators, Riverdale became one of its initial neighborhoods. By 1830, it had become an official neighborhood within Chicago proper. Throughout its history, Riverdale has been a center for trade and commerce. Today it remains an important cultural corridor with many businesses located there including restaurants and shopping centers like Sears Tower and Midtown Center. Some of the earliest businesses in Riverdale include Jansen's Tavern (founded 1786), Alice's Bag & Toy Shop (1814), Dunham & Wigglesworth's Grocery Store (1824), The Roaring Twenties Social Club (1910-1911) and The Gilded Age Social Club (1920). Many famous residents have lived or worked in or around Riverdale including Abraham Lincoln, James Buchanan, Franklin D Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson Jr..

It was founded in 1837 by John Charles Comstock, who named it for his river-side home in Niagara Falls, New York. The city became a suburb of Chicago after World War II and now has a population of over 200,000 people.
Riverdale is located in Chatham County, Illinois, and is the only municipality in the county. The population was 8,562 at the 2000 census. Riverdale is one of five villages in Chatham County. It is bordered to the north by Clinton Township and to the east by Peoria Township. The Village of Riverdale was organized on February 12, 1871, from parts of Clinton Township and Peoria Township. At that time, it consisted of a small area east of Interstate 86 between Utopia Road and South Avenue. The name “Riverdale” originated from a stream that ran through its center. The village had two mills until 1898 when they were replaced by a combined sawmill/grinding mill complex which continues to be used today as Riverdale Mills LLC. Located in downtown Riverdale are three churches: First Baptist Church (1892), Christ United Methodist Church (1915), and Parkview Missionary Baptist Church (1963). Riverdale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and forms the northwestern border of the city of Chicago. The village was founded by settlers in 1837 and incorporated as a city in 1847. Riverdale was made a county seat in 1865, but it lost its status as a county seat after Cook County was created from parts of DuPage and Kane counties. In 1898, Riverdale became one of sixteen townships in Cook County to be merged into the city of Chicago. The town charter for Riverdale stated that "N/A" would mean not applicable to them because they were outside of downtownChicago proper; this policy has been kept up to date through annexations within or adjacent to the City limits since then. Riverdale is located on both banks of the Des Plaines River, east and west of downtown Chicago. To its north are Lake Michigan and suburban communities such as Hinshaw Heights and Maywood; to its south are Wood Dale and Lawndale neighborhoods which make up much of Chicagoland's northern boundary. The first recorded mentionof Riverdale came about forty years ago when John Puskar purchased land eaststream from Michalek for $2 per acre (the same price that he paid for his farmstead). This purchase sets off what would become an important agricultural community near present-day Oak Park Avenue between Wabash Avenue on the north side and Kedzie Avenue on the south side - all within easy walking distance either directly or via streetcar or bus stop across Cicero Street just off Oak Park Boulevard today (Riverside Drive runs parallel with Kedzie). There were also several smaller parcels scattered around desiring vicinity subject only unto their respective owners' cultivation: some fields lay along Dearborn Street now home to Riverside Hospital while other acreage lay northwest corner lot currently occupied by former Home Depot Headquarters building before being reclaimed by forest Preserves... [T]he early days were difficult enough without having neighbours who could do us harm! Today we're so lucky our peaceful lifestyle has allowed us uninterrupted access to our natural resources! Today mortgages still dominate real estate decisions here so if you're thinking about buying property here today keep that in mind too!
