Riverdale is a small town in Illinois, United States. It is located in the far southwestern corner of the state, and is bordered by Danville to the north, Carbondale to the east, and Bloomington to the south. The population was 6,988 at the 2010 census. The name "RIVERDALE" derives from a Native American word meaning "the place where you can see water". A post office called Riverdale was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1916. The first settler in Riverdale was John Grimes; he built a cabin on what is now West Main Street. In 1883, James Fenton purchased land near present-day Elmira for a millrace that would power his new irrigation system. By 1901, there were over seventy businesses operating along riverfront streets between Elmira and Carbondale. In 1922, Riverdale became part of Chicago when Illinois become an official US state. At this time it had a population of only 3,000 people; however, by 1940 its population had grown to 14,500 people living on 5 square miles (12 km²). During World War II many residents worked on defense plants located throughout Illinois; some remain local landmarks today such as Grunty's Garage or Haggerty Engine Works. However most residents left during the McCarthy years when stricter anti-communism laws took hold across much of America Riverdale has seen some growth since then with many families moving into the area after finding affordable housing options available hereabouts Today Riverdale remains one of southern Illinois' most unassuming towns with few if any flashy marketing campaigns or tourist traps Sluglett's shouldered most recently opened up next door which does add some excitement but I must say I haven't tried it yet

Riverdale is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,582 at the 2010 census. Riverdale is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by other towns to the north and east: Mount Prospect to the west, Lombard to the south, Westchester to the southeast and Oak Forest to the southwest. The first settlers in what would become Riverdale were farmers who started arriving in 1836. By 1840, there were over 150 people living in Riverdale. The post office was founded in 1842 and served as a stop on stagecoaches travelling between Chicago and other nearby settlements. In 1847, John Ladd founded a sawmill that became one of the largest employers in town. He also constructed a log church which still stands today. In 1861-1862, during the American Civil War, Riverdale was used as an encampment for Union troops on their way upriver from points northward towards Lake Michigan. On October 8th 1862, Confederate forces attacked Union soldiers at night near present day Glendale Heights; eight men were killed and twenty-six wounded according to history sources Aftermath of this attack saw much violence throughout Kane County with many homes burned or looted by both sides including those of some of local residents such as John Ladd who had been sheltering his people inside his establishment while they awaited news of their friends back home across the river. The attackers managed only minor damage when they withdrew after finding no resistance before returning later that night with more men under cover of darkness again looting property all around them before finally fleeing back into Illinois once they had satisfied their thirst for revenge By 1865 most of Riverdale had been abandoned due largely to lack of available land elsewhere within Kane County for farming or development however some houses still stand today examples being Haggerty House ( Built c 1830), Meadowlark House (Built ca 1860), Alice Roberts House (1875) & Maynard Farmstead (Built c 1800). With Reconstruction now approaching it seemed likely that most if not all these structures would be lost forever however thankfully preservationists have taken action over recent decades restoring many aspects including new construction on some properties like Meadowlark House including its original central front porch which has been reconstructed using period materials from that time Today Riverside Park has emerged as one ofRiverdaletowns major attractions providing access both through its linear parkland encompassing several miles along Boys Town Creek as well as its two main lakes - Gooseberry Pond & Willow Pond - as well as diverse open space habitats providing opportunities for exploration/enjoyment beyond simply walking or playing amongst natural resources During World War II Shipbuilding activity took place in riverdale resulting in several large ships being built here such as USS "Iowa" & USS "Arkansas". As latecomers shipyards often struggled with meeting wartime production quotas this led Naval Admiral James Forrestal ordering shipyards located outside US shores closed down on December 15th 1941 effective January 1st 1942 due to popular demand from Commander USA Ships Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz . However even though many shipbuilders did manage make deliveries under new management none met Forrestal's expectations for quality so he ordered them reopened soon afterwards . The first white American settlers in Riverdale, Illinois were the Rogers family. The Rogerses came to Riverdale from Kentucky in 1814. They built a cabin on the now-defunct Bigalow Prairie and named their settlement after General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1876 during the Mexican–American War. The Rogerses were among the first Americans to arrive in what is now Riverdale. In 1835, John Quincy Adams was elected president of the United States. He decided to move his presidential residence from New York City to Washington D.C., and he commissioned surveyor Daniel Lounsbury to plat out a town called "Riverdale" in Maryland within Washington's boundaries. Lounsbury created a town map of "Riverdale" that accurately reflected the layout of Georgetown, which lay just east of present-day Riverdale. In 1836, Nicholas Ballou married Lydia Maria Child and moved to Riverdale with her. Their children included Charles Ballou (1837-1923), Augustus Francis Ballou (1839-1925), Alfred Everett Ballou (1841-1924), Franklin Pierce Ballou (1843-1926), Helen Elizabeth Ballou (1845-1927), and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (1847-1945).
