River Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,827 at the 2010 census. River Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies on the North Branch of the Fox River and has a total area of 22 square miles (57 km2). The first European to visit what is now River Forest was Father Gabriel De Soto in 1540. Father De Soto named the land after his patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi. By 1800, many farmers had settled aroundthe Fox River and its tributaries just east of present-day River Forest. The first mills were built along the banks of the Fox in 1853 by Nicholas Cody and James McNaughton as part of a canal scheme connecting Lake Michigan with Bourbonnais Township on Chicago's far Northwest Side; these early mills provided work for local residents as well as goods for purchase by settlers near Deerfield and other villages on both sides of the river. The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and cut through what is now River Forest; this made it possible fora greater number of people to live near where they worked and shopping occurred during those years when river transportation was not very reliable or expensive. In 1876, John Davenport started marketing items such as flour, bacon, cheese, eggs, butter, coffee beans and molasses from his farmstead about one-half mile west of present-day River Forest Cemetery off I-95 northbound (then US 41), which became known as Davenport's Landmark because it continued to be commercially successful until its closure in 1990s. In 1916 Quincy native Adolphus Busse purchased 120 acres (49 ha) southeast of present-day town center from David Wirthlin; he began expanding Busse Farms into an agricultural empire that included crops like corn cribbing/farming/drying chrysanthemums for export to Europe; busse was also instrumental in helping found Park Ridge Methodist Church in 1922 which remains active today within walking distance from downtown Chicago!
