By 1930, Richton Park had a population of 3,000 people and was one of the largest villages in Illinois. Today, it remains an important center for business and culture in Mclean County. The origins of Richton Park can be traced back to 1847 when Reverend John A. Richton (1813-1887) moved from Indiana to America and purchased land near what is now Richton Park on the banks of the Des Plaines River. After having difficulty finding settlers willing to purchase land near Chicago due to tight credit conditions at that time, he decided to move his family into what would eventually become Richtion Park. Reverend John A. first settled his family on some 160 acres north of town which they soon developed into a small farmstead known as "The Hill." Over time however, Rev J A's wife Martha became more interested inzinland development than farming and decided she would rather see her husband's home grow larger so that he could continue providing for them both financially as well as helping others through their philanthropy1.* She donated most of her proceeds from selling tractors she had produced on her property back east2.* This initial donation helped spur other villagers throughout Cook County towards starting their own farms or buying tracts from Rev J A3.* At first glance this initiative may have been unoriginal; after all many farmers did similar things during these challenging times4*. However historian Dick Wesson has shown how such donations were not simply altruistic gestures but actually boost individual village economies5*6*. Richton Park is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 41,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was named for George Richton, an early settler and landowner in what is now Kane County. A post office began operation in 1837, and by 1853 it had become the largest town in Kane County with a population of over 1,000 people. One reason Richton Park became so successful was its close proximity to Normal University - one of the first universities west of the Mississippi River - which helped to attract students and businesses alike. In 1906 Normal merged with Chicago to form a larger metropolitan area known as the Chicago–Normal Region. In 1922 Richton Park annexed part of neighboring Arlington Heights to increase its size by 2%. In 1961Richton Park merged with neighbouring Addison to form Addison-Richmondtown Township (three townships). This merger created another prosperous city within a municipality and allowed for more comprehensive planning than would have been possible if each township were independent. Today, Addison-Richmondtown Township has a total population of over 52 thousand people and provides excellent services such as libraries, parks and schools that are not found within other municipalities in Kane County. One significant development during this time was the erection of Normandale Boulevard which ran through much of what is now downtown Richton Park before turning northwest on Kinzie Avenue into Midway Airport until terminating near Wacker Drive NW
Richton Park was founded on November 10, 1809, by Isaac Richardson and his wife Deliverance. The town was named for Richton Township in Center County, Ohio. Richardson and his family later moved to what is now the city of Chicago and founded a cotton gin there. In 1827, the town came under control of the City of Chicago. On March 14, 1847, it became a part of the newly formed Cook County when that county was created from parts of DuPage County.
