The Coast Guard in Richton Park, Illinois began providing services in 1899. The first coast guard station was built on the present site of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1903. In 1916, the Coast Guard erected a lighthouse on the Black Rock River near White Sands Beach. In 1922, the Coast Guard established a proficiency training center for divers in Crystal Lake. In 1928, the Coast Guard constructed a state-of-the-art harbor in Richton Park which became home to many marine and aviation equipment stores and laboratories. The Harbor Master’s office was moved from White Sands Beach to this facility in 1959. In 1992, Congress passed an actocating $3 million for new shoreline construction along Chicago’s Northwestern waterfront includingRichton Park. This money was used to construct two new harbours: one on the north side of Lake Michigan and another on the south side of river that connects with Navy Pier. In 2006, after years of planning and design work, construction began on what is now known as “Hollywood Harbour” at Hollywood Quay on Cook Avenue adjacent to Hollywood Casino & Resort – one of Chicagoland’s most popular tourist destinations! This large project includes both a marina with slips for pleasure craft as well as an extensive wharf system for docking larger vessels such as cruise ships and LNG carriers!

It is located on the south side of Chicago and east of Wicker Park. The Richton Park community took its name from Jameson Richton (1819-1884), who was one of the pioneers in what became Cook County. He built a sawmill on the banks of the Chicago River in 1847, and later developed land around it into a cotton plantation that produced crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans and rice. In 1892, he donated $10 million to help finance the construction of Columbia University in New York City. The university's first building was built in Richton Park; today it is known as Old Main. In addition to its namesake and other pioneer residents, Richton Park has been home to many famous people over the years: Richard Nixon (president Nixon), Nelson Mandela (President Mandela), Michael Jordan (basketball player), Ellen DeGeneres (comedienne), Oprah Winfrey (talk show host) and Mayor Rahm Emanuel (formerly mayor ofChicago).

In 1851–52, when Illinois became a state, Richton Park was platted as one of the townships in Cook County. The first post office was established in Richton Park on December 1, 1851. In 1870–71, richTON PARK BUSINESS DISTRICT INCorporatedwas organized to provide business services to businesses located within its boundaries; this district later became known as "Richton Park". On November 2nd of that year businessman George Pullen donated land to the town for a public park which he had purchased just east of his home at 7551 North Pulaski Road. TheRichiton Park Business District would become one of the most important civic organizations in thetown through its contributions and donations over time to many local charities and causes such as education and parks programs
Richton Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 41,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. The first European settlement in what is now Richton Park was made by Danish immigrants who arrived in 1836 and named their new town Sønderborg after their old home on Zealand island. The town was formally incorporated as a city on January 1, 1845. In 1865, the rich land near Lake Michigan that had been owned by Abraham Lincoln and his family was granted to Richton Park by President Abraham Lincoln as part of the Homestead Act. At its peak in 1870,Richton Park had a population of over 100 people and several businesses including a sawmill and flour mill. The city annexed the neighboring towns of Bolingbrook (1872) and Westchester (1906). In 1907, Richton Park became one of the few cities in Cook County to adopt an urban charter which allowed for more open competition with other municipalities within Cook County without having to go through a vote from the citizens. In 1916-1917, large sections of Richton Park were destroyed by fire caused by defective gaslights installed during World War I as part of Chicago's " blackout ". The explosion occurred about two blocks west of State Street across from Northwestern University’s Richardson Hall building; it killed 12 people and injured dozens more. rebuilt quickly but left many scars that still affect the community today On October 25th 1914 approximately 2 blocks west of State Street across from Northwestern University’s Richardson Hall building; an uncontrolled gas leak led to an intense fire that consumed over 20 homes & businesses resulting in fatalities & injures amounting to 63%.
