Rantoul, Illinois is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Rantoul first appeared on maps in 1836. In 1849 it became a town and held its first election that year. On December 3, 1850, the village was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his family who donated land to form the town. The community had a post office from 1851 to 1865 and also had an academy until 1861 when it closed because of financial problems. The first school in Rantoul opened in 1853 as an Academy School and operated until 1861 when it closed because of financial problems. The second school started up again in 1865 and operated until 1870 when it too closed because of financial problems. In 1892 Anson Dixon built what is now known as Old Town Hall which served as the new village hall from 1893-1902 while also serving as a church until 1978 when it burned down due to arson. A new building was constructed at this location in 2002 which still serves as the Village Hall today On November 15th, 2006 voters passed a ballot measure that would add $5 million dollars per year into the local economy through tax increment financing (TIF) for businesses within Rantoul Village Formation District #1C which would create over 100 jobs over 10 years with no increase in taxes paid by residents or businesses within that district; this program is known as "Tax Incremental Development" (TIDA).
