Rantoul is a small town in La Salle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,488 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded by John A. Rantoul and his wife Catharine (née Stephenson) on October 3, 1841 as a post office called "Rantoul". They named it after their home state of Illinois. In 1868, they organized what would become the first local school district in La Salle County. The railroad arrived in 1870 and changed the landscape of the community; now much of it is within walking distance of various businesses and services including hospitals and schools. Aquinas Catholic Church is one of America's most well-known churches with more than 25 million followers worldwide. It has been located in Rantoul since 1921 when Father Giles Shea purchased land from Jansen & Co., an early developer in the town center area west of downtown Rantoul on present day Elm Street between First Avenue and Adams Boulevard. Aquinas became one of America's largest Catholic parishes with its original building completed in 1922 adjacent to present day UIUC's campus which then surrounded Aquinas'. Today, Aquinas operates two elementary schools - Stritch School for grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade (opened 1985), followed by Holy Cross Elementary School for 6th through 8th grade (opened 2002). Rantoul is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Rantoul is located in the west central part of McLean County on the southern border of Cook County. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Rantoul were farmers and their families who started arriving around 1827. By 1830, there were 30 families living here. In 1836, Jno Hargrave purchased land here from John Pemberton for $1,200 and began to plant corn and other crops. He also built a log cabin which served as his home until his death in 1857. His wife, Mary Hargrave (1810-1881), continued to live here with their two children until her death in 1883. In 1860, John Cramer bought some land from Jno Hargrave and began to planting cotton along with other crops. He also built a store on the lot he owned that became known as "Cramer's Corner." In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited this town during his campaign for president and spent time at Cramer's Corner before continuing on to Deer Park where he delivered a speech that day. During World War II many residents decided they would rather stay close to home and not serve in the war because it was too dangerous out there; however some did go off to fight as soon as training started up North (the majority returned after completing basic training). After the war ended most people returned back home but a few took jobs away from locals like Robert McGowan who ran an ice cream parlor across the street from Rantoul Hall School until his retirement in 1978 - one of only three men ever employed by that organization throughout its history! It wasn't until after Barack Obama was elected President in 2008 that things changed again - many people decided they wanted something different happening here so they came back activism-wise starting up organizations like Resist We Can! which works towards cleaning up local cleanups each week while keeping politics out of it!
