Rantoul, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first white person to set foot in Rantoul was John Quincy Adams who came overland fromwhat is now Springfield, Massachusetts in 1835. He and his family built a cabin on the bluff overlooking the present-day town of Rantoul. Adams preached Christianity to Native Americans there and founded what would become St. James Episcopal Church which still stands today as a cultural landmark in town. In 1855, Congress passed an act setting up the towns of Rantoulland Rockford as well as others within Cook County including Rantoul; these were all named after John Quincy Adams and his wife Abigail Dodge Adams (née Carr). In 1871, two brothers by the name of Sprague bought land northwest of downtown Rantoul for $2 per acre and started farming it with their families. They laid out streets and businesses near their home before dying suddenly at age 60 in 1895 while harvesting chestnuts on their farmstead east of town limits (). Their son Louie Sprague continued farming until he sold it in 1951 to Harry Fenton for $1 million (). Sprague had been influential in founding both Rockford () and later Elmhurst (), so when Fenton acquired it he also became interested in developing Rantoul into a large city like Rockford or Elmhurst (). However, even with all that progress since then (), little has happened to make Rantoul an urban center like those two cities did decades ago.: particularly given its lack of public transportation options or economic opportunities.: Despite this lacklustre history however things are changing: On July 10th 2016 local developer Matt Weisbrot announced plans for The Park - a mixed use development consisting of office space, residential units, retail stores etc., adjacent to Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library & Museum - which will bring much needed redevelopment hope to the struggling community.: This project marks not onlysignificant news for residents but also indicates that developers aren't just turning their backs on traditional Main Street businesses anymore!:
