Rantoul is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1847 by John Rantoul and his wife Elizabeth Wagoner Rantoul. The first post office in Rantoul was established on November 10, 1847; it operated under the name "Fulton". In 1854, the name change to "Rantoul" after President James K. Polk's visit to that community. The first store in town was built by Elisha Sayer and Nellie Blyth on Main Street in 1848. A school opened in 1860 and remained open until 1953 when it merged with nearby Morton Grove Elementary School to form Morton Grove-Rantoul Middle School. According to the 2010 census, Rantoul has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (2%) is water. Of this land, (or 94%) is rural land and (4%) comprises some of what are now Rantyville Township communities along Lake Michigan shoreline east of I-94; these were once part of what was known as “Old†Rantyville Township but were annexed into new townships since 2002 when all township boundaries were redrawn following approval from the Illinois General Assembly through an act entitled “The Town Boundaries Amendment Act†No: 111-070/bill no.: HB 611). As such, while much of what makes up today's village or township core lies within current township boundaries - including most of Old Rantyville Township - much also remains within present day villages ortownships located outside those boundaries altogether making for a rich history that can still be seen today even if many residents may not realize it!
