The village's namesake comes from two pioneer families: The Hantzons bought 100 acres of land near what would later become town center in 1856 for $1 per acre. They named their new settlement "Rantoul" after Illinois' first capital city, Springfield. After six years of farming, they moved their operations to what would become the heart of town - a large clearing that still stands today known as Old Main Street - and began building their homes around it. In 1872 they opened up shoplifting behind the old post office before finally opening their own store two years later with cooperation from other stores in neighboring townsfolk. By 1880 there were 10 businesses operating within walking distance of each other;today only one remains active- A convenience store operated by privately owned Arabson's Grocery since 1984.
In 1886 President Grover Cleveland granted representative status to Rantoul;it became an official U.S.-based suburb on July 1st 1917 when its residents voted 3-2 in favor of incorporation into McLean County.
During World War II many locals served in military units including Douglas MacArthur's 4th Infantry Division Headquarters here

Rantoul is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Rantoul was platted in 1871 by George Bigham and John W. Church as a town on the site of what is now West Side Highway and South Western Avenue. The first post office was established in 1870. The Village of Rantoul was organized on November 7, 1974 from portions of the Town of Rantoul which had been annexed by the Village of Cicero on October 25, 1973. On October 25, 1973, Cicero annexing Rantoul gave Cicero control over all land east of Willis Road in Cicero Township that had not previously been included within the Village boundaries - including parts of Rantoullite that are now located inside the City limits ofChicago. On December 6, 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated Christmas trees as a city holiday in honor of Mayor Richard Mapplethorpe who had championed this cause when he served as Chicago's first mayor with responsibility for public holidays
