Quincy, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,552 at the 2010 census. Quincy is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Kane County District Court Building. Quincy's history dates back to 1803 when Captain George Rogers Clark came through the area on his survey of the Northwest Territory. Quincy was founded by John Quincy Adams in 1803 as a station on the Great Western Road. In 1821, Quincy became a town when it merged with neighboring Terre Haute and Norfolk Township. The first post office opened in Quincey on October 17, 1830. The first settlers were farmers who arrived during the 1830s seeking land east of Chicago along what is now what is called the "Green Line." Many of these early settlers moved north into Canada where they started new farms and towns before returning to America in search of new territory. Some of these pioneers founded companies that developed small townships throughout central Illinois such as Terre Haute and Norfolk Township which later amalgamated with Quincy to form Kane County in 1833. In 1840, President James K. Polk signed an act giving all residents of Iowa (then part of Missouri) free passage through Illinois if they desired for one year only across state lines without having to obtain permission from their respective legislatures; this act also saw development in modern dayMissouri–Kansas border areas near Quad Cities and Overland Park since those people could travel freely between those areas without being considered trespassers or criminals under Missouri law at that time. Kansas City (later Independence) had been built as an outpost on top of present day Springfield due to its location next door to Missouri’s capital city about halfway between Topeka and St Louis which made it accessible via wagon road from Independence northwestward into what are today rural parts of northeast Kansas City including Maplewood and Ridgefield which formed part of Jackson Township until 1861 when it became part of Quincy village limits following creation of Jackson Township proper within Kane County independent from both Topeka and Springfield township thereby eliminating any ambiguity over boundary changes concurrent with Kansas City becoming an official UPI city although Livingston Parish continued southward adjacent Butler Parish until 1889 when that parish separated from Randolph county forming West Side Chicago Heights Borough within Cookcounty subsequent annexation by Rockford proper consistent with local plans for annexation notwithstanding some protests by residents who feared lossof qualityoflifeandeconomic opportunities resultingfrom integration). As late as 1906 there still existed some concern about allowing white persons residing outside Indian Reservations located inside Indian Territory – i.e., those living on reservations within territorial borders but not Inside Indian Country – access to education generally available onlyto Native American citizens regardless OF residency status because many non-native schoolchildren attending schools operated out-of-town facilities known as “Indian Schools” rather than inside reservation boundaries despite efforts by parents/guardians/school board membersto open such institutions within reservation boundaries instead fearing discriminationby agents working for US government officials responsible for boarding childrenentseredoutside reservation boundaries pursuantto national provisions setting forth guidelines governing international student navigationand enrollment).
