The Quincy community has been a part of the military for as long as there have been soldiers in the area. The first military deployment of any sort was when the United States Navy stationed sailors in Quincy in 1854 to help with the Mexican-American War. The Navy also deployed troops to Quincy during World War II, and again during the Vietnam War. Today, many people in Quincy are familiar with the history of military deployments through their local military units or through related events that have taken place within town. Many residents also grew up knowing about and/or serving in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve or U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Units stationed hereabouts. One of the most famous examples of a community hosting an overseas military deployment is Quincy's participation in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. That year, Quincy residents served alongside members from other communities along with Marines from Unit 731 at Camp Pendleton, California; these troops played a significant role in crushing Iraqi forces opposing Saddam Hussein's regime on behalf of coalition forces led by President George H.W._ Bush and Prime Minister John Howard Since then, many more Quincy residents have served or are currently serving abroad: In 2013-14 alone, 1,313 civilians were specialty trained by British Army units at Camberley Barracks near London while located nearby at RAF Marhammere; this increased following Typhoon storms that caused extensive damage across England It's no wonder then that gift history for those who serve within our community ranges from commemoration items (mantles worn during deployments) to unique items such as action figures or dogtags made specifically for servicemen and women visiting home from duty around the world (recently included members of both Regular Force & Auxiliary Forces). The Quincy militiamen have been deployed to fight in many different wars. The town's namesake, General John Brown, was a hero of the American Revolution and later served as a brigadier general in the Union army. In 1814, Quincy residents raised money to send a detachment of troops to help suppress a slave uprising in Missouri. The town subsequently became home to one of the first militias in Illinois. As the state's population grew and its needs for militia increased, so too did Quincy's ties to the military. In 1847, local citizens formed an irregular cavalry unit called the "Quincy Rifles." This unit operated until 1861 when it was disbanded due to lack of funding. From 1861-1865, Quincy residents served in various regiments stationed at Camp Douglas on their own property near present-day Springfield. After his retirement from active duty in 1865, General John Brown donated land near Quincy for use as an annual military encampment known as "John Brown's Camp." Today, this camp provides education and opportunity for children from Quincy area schools.

Quincy is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Quincy was founded in 1802 by Captain John Quincy and his family as a trading post on the Great Lakes. In 1815, Quincy became part of the Northwest Territory when Illinois was admitted to the Union as a state. After years of struggle with waves of Native American attackers, Captain Quincy's settlement eventually flourished and he became one of the wealthiest men in Illinois. In 1847, John Quincy Jr., father of James K. Polk who served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President from 1893-1897, purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) wide strip of land on which he built what is now known as The Park at Quincy Market Place. The park includes areas for dining and shopping, open to the public since 1851. Quincy has been called "The Athens" or "The Athens Village" because it had many high-ranking officials who attended Harvard University during its first hundred years including Presidents George Washington and James K.
