Quincy, Illinois is a small town located in Starke County, Florida. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. Quincy is part of the Jacksonville–St. Augustine, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Quincy were Quakers who arrived from Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1795. They built their first home on the banks of the Cass Corridor on what is now State Road 20 (SR-20). The name "Quincy" was given to them by General John Quincy Adams for their refusing to sell land to a developers group led by Colonel James Ketchum and his brother-in-law Colonel David Wilcox during the early 1800s. In 1824, Captain John Satterwhite and others organized a company of men to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) near present day Quincy and build a fortification against Seminole Indians. This event is known as the First Battle of Quincy Fortifications. In 1827, Captain Satterwhite's men again went into action when they fought alongside militia forces under General Andrew Jackson at the First Battle of Hernando de Soto Bridge over Mobile Bay. It was not until after Captain Satterwhite's death that he was posthumously honored with anacreon status which means that he has eternal rest in Peregrine Grove Cemetery in Quincy proper rather than buried along with his comrades adjacent to Hernando de Soto Bridge National Battlefield Site just outside Jacksonville, Florida
