The Quincy Air Force Base, located in Quincy, Illinois, was originally established on July 1, 1942 as the main air-defense installation for the Northwest Territory of Illinois. The base was initially named Midway Field and served as an auxiliary airfield for Camp Douglas which was located near Cairo, Illinois. The first group of Air National Guard pilots arrived at Midway Field on October 16, 1942. On November 15th the first squadron of P-51 Mustangs arrived from Washington D.C., and also the first Group Headquarters unit (HQ) detachment arrived on December 8th with Colonel John Crouch as its commanding officer. On January 9th 1943 HQ Detachment 2 departed Midway Field for RAF Boulogne France where it served as a training unit until February 1944 when it became a fighter squadron under command of First Lieutenant James Ault. In May 1944 HQ Squadron detached to RAF Wetherby in England and operated until September 1st 1945 when it returned to Quincy AFB with Second Lieutenant Harry Eaton in command after serving at RAF Fakenham while assigned to IX Bomber Command’s European operation “Master Plan 4” during Operation Neptune’s Spear – June–October 1944). Upon its return to Quincy AFB Third Lt Harry Eaton organized and commanded Headquarters Squadron which consisted of: 1st Lt Art Ritchie (later killed in action), 2nd Lt Cecil Lunsford (later promoted to Captain), 3rdLt Harry Eaton Jr., Sgt Lewis Hovey and Pvt Floyd Jansen who were all born in 1922 in Quincy Township and died within one year ofeach other on August 14th 1950 just shy of their seventeenth birthdays; these men collectively formed what is now known as “Quincy's Own” USAF Fighter Wing flying Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft equipped with Anaconda radar Warning Receiver system that had been developed at Wright Patterson AFB Ohio by Major Arthur Hillenbrand who became Deputy Commander/First Pilot/Director Aircraft Specifications Branch responsible for development concerning all Warning Receiver systems used by USAF fighters worldwide including those operating within Italy etc.). HQ Wing flew its last mission over Rome Italy on October 24th 1945 over Lingotto AB approximately 350 miles southeast of Rome; this was their fifteenth combat mission since arrival at Quincy AFB two months earlier when they were joined by 3rdLt Harry Eaton Jr who relieved FirstLt Art Ritchie due to his mandatory absence from active duty due to illness then remaining attached with HQ Wing throughout its duration flyingoriginallypilot seat but later becomingFirstLieutenant pilotingan American World War II veteran Corsair aircraft from USS Independence (CV-12) providing searchlight support during aerial campaigns against Nazi Germany).
