By 1840, Prospect Heights had become an important commercial center due to its location on state routes 56 and 161; it was also home to several schools including one operated by Deaconess Female Seminary which still exists today. In 1847, Englishman Major General George Washington Polk took up residence nearby at his summer home Bichon Frise House; he was then serving as territorial governor of Illinois under Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican–American War. On October 25th that year, Washington Polk died suddenly at age 50 while visiting his ranch outside O’Fallon; his death left Illinois without its first Ulysses S Grant – this event helped spur Illinois into becoming one of the United States during that period with Abraham Lincoln being elected president just two years later on November 6th despite no political experience!
