The USS Michigan (BB-8) was the first ship to be christened in Pontiac, Illinois. She was built at the Pascagoula Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Mobile, Alabama, and launched on July 12, 1944. The BB-8 served as a minesweeper during World War II, and was struck from the Navy List on November 20, 1946. She was sold to the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force on February 24, 1945. The JMSDF renamed her Kaga Maru No. 8 after their own ships of that name. On October 10, 1951 she collided with the SS Princeton while transiting between Japan and Korea waters off Okinawa; both vessels were destroyed by fire. Kaga Maru No. 8 reached Japan safely but suffered major damage including loss of her bowsprit and rudder due to tearing by flames from Princeton's furnaces along with water flooding into her hold which caused a total loss of freshwater cargo worth ¥2 million ($24 million today).
Pontiac is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 22,821 at the 2000 census. Pontiac's nickname comes from the fact that it is located on the Chicago and Indiana Railroad. The city proper was platted in 1871 and named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States from 1849 to 1853. Pontiac was once an important railroad town because its location on the Chicago and Indiana Railroad made it a natural center for trade with neighboring towns and cities on both sides of the tracks. The local banks were also major providers of financial services to Pontiac's residents. Today, Pontiac remains an important cultural and commercial center; its downtown has been designated a national Historic District since 1984. The first settlers in what is now Pontiac arrived in 1836 when Samuel McGee settled hereabouts on land granted him by General Anthony Wayne during the military occupation of Illinois following American victory over France in the War of 1812. However, not many people moved to this area until after Illinois became part of the United States following its admission into Confederation in 1787. In fact, only one other settler—John Doane—moved to Pontiac until 1840 when he bought land from John Walsh at mile post 6 Road (now Fuller Street) about two miles west of present-day Pontiac Junction railway station. At first red earth farming methods were used here, but later cultivated crops such as corn, cottonseed oilcake (a type of cooking oil), potatoes, turnips and other vegetables were developed using early 1800s technology brought over by travelers passing through this region during their travels up or down theChicago & Indiana Railway (C&I). Pontiac is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,473 at the 2010 census. Pontiac was founded in 1854 by General David Hull and his family as a small community on the east bank of the Chicago River. In 1887, the Hulls donated land to create what is now Pontiac Township; it was named for their father, John P. Hull. The townspeople built their first home in 1855 and began to sell goods and services from a store on the riverbank. The first post office opened in 1861. In 1872, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad extended its line to Pontiac and made it an important center for transportation on the then-new Great Lakes region. The town continued to grow throughthe years and annexed portions of neighboring townships including Addison (1920), Harper (1925), Elk Grove (1929), and Lombard (1933). By 1930, Pontiac had a population of 19,526 people living in 559 businesses. The municipality became official when it adopted its current name of Pontiac on December 12, 1934 following passage of a referendum that approved the change by a majority vote. As part of its celebration of its centennial year in 2009–10,[1] Pontiac elected officials unveiled "A Century of Progress" plaque located at an old mill pond adjacent to downtown which served as both civic and commercial center during that time period During World War II, many residents worked at local munitions plants such as Phelps Dodge Corporation's White Sands Ammunition Plant just north of town or DuPont’s Wilmington Arsenal plant just south of town while others worked for government agencies such as U S Steel Corp.'s Garysburg Arsenal plant across I-88 from town limits between 1945-1950[2].
