Pontiac's nickname "The People's City" comes from its policy of giving all citizens "a voice". Pontiac was founded on April 12, 1837 by John Dunlap as a small settlement on the banks of the river Kankakee River about south-southeast of Chicago. It became an important trading post for fur traders and travelers along the Upper Kankakee River during the early 1800s. In 1849, after years of wrangling among various groups withinDuPage County over land grants and other issues, Pontiac was organized as a town with a government that included five trustees who were elected by residents to serve three-year terms. In 1861, following Abraham Lincoln's victory in the American Civil War and his proclamation calling for reparations for slaveowners across America, Pontiac voted to secede fromDuPage County and become part of Indiana Territory. However, this decision didn't go well with many residents who saw themselves as integral to Du Page County's success story during that era. In 1865–1866, after some skirmishes between local Confederate forces and Union troops near downtown Pontiac (known then as North Bridge), Du Page County commissioners decided not to pursue any further annexation into Indiana Territory because they felt it would only lead to more conflict and bloodshed across their county line – something that had already been happening sporadically since 1851 when violence erupted following disputed elections in nearby Aurora Township (now parts of Aurora). After several months' reflection and evaluation by commissioners chaired by Judge Samuel Canfield – an experienced lawyer who had led prosecutions against criminals including hardened IRA members – Pontiac finally voted to secede fromDu PAGE COUNTY on October 11th 1865 under the name 'Pontiac'. Canfield immediately issued an order dismissing all charges against municipal officials including Mayor James Hickey (who had refused to sign secession papers) until he could be sure that all citizens were aware of this fact; before doing so he warned them not to cross federal lines without proper justification or consequences would follow should they do so. With new boundaries set forth by General Order No 6055 dated November 8th 1865 which restricted individual counties within Illinois Territory as well as neighboring states such as Wisconsin & Iowa thereto (the Butler Carbine Rebellion having recently broken out in those states), much internal warfare ensued among community leaders over whether or not they should continue seceding or unite with their compatriots in Indiana Territory – ultimately leading to two days of riots between pro-secessionistsand anti-secessionists which left at least six people dead (most likely more dueto injuries sustained during clashes than anything else).
