Prior to 1957, when Interstate 95 bypassed Pontiac east of town along present day I-94 (now US Highway 130), much of what is now downtown Pontiac was undeveloped rural land leased by farmers for grazing or agricultural purposes only a few miles away from their homes. One early resident described this area as "a Depression Era ghost town". In 1957 Mayor John Cavanaugh issued a proclamation designating downtownPontiac as an open space representing "an important step forward for development". Today many restaurants still sit near old brick buildings dating back to those days including The Five Spot which opened its doors on May 15th 1948 just west of present day First National Bank Building
