Pontiac, Illinois is a small town located in the northern part of the state of Illinois. The population was 5,449 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Pontiac is named after General John P. Pontiac and his brigade which fought in the War of 1812. The first permanent settler in Pontiac was Captain John Fenton who arrived in 1792. In 1847, Colonel Samuel Bowen purchased land from Captain Fenton and founded the town on what is now State Route 7 near present-day Springfield. At this time it was known as "Bowen's Landing." The Townspeople renamed their settlement after General John P. Pontiac, who had fought in the war and was one of their many heroes. The first store opened in 1848 and by 1865 there were six stores and a Post Office hereabouts serving all parts of the township with mail service being provided to Hannibal by horseback courier fromSpringfield until1868 when express service became available from Chicago viathe Rock Island Railroad. In 1893, a new Pingree Opera House was built on North Broadway Street for $10,000 dollars which still stands today as one of the most popular tourist attractions for visitors to Pontiac during summertime! In 1898, an electric streetcar system called "The Pompeiians" started running between Pontiac and Carbondale providing convenient transportation for locals not able to drive or take public transportation; today's bus system provides similar services today! During World War II, Pontiac played home to thousands of servicemen who worked at various munitions plants throughout central Illinois including nearby Rockford where over 40% of all America’s ammunition production took place! The coffee scene in the United States began to grow significant in the late 1800s, when coffee beans were first introduced from Africa. Coffee beans were traded and sold by African slaves on their plantations. In 1825, a group of Dutch entrepreneurs bought a small plantation in California and started to produce coffee. The first commercial printing press was developed in the early 1830s for selling coffee products. Coffee was imported into Europe and Asia through ports such as Rotterdam and Lisbon. In 1846, James Kapp acquired a large parcel of land near San Francisco Bay, which became known as "the Jack London Ranch". Kapp's coffee production increased rapidly, reaching an estimated 2 million pounds/year by 1851. By 1870, his operation had become one of the largest and most successful American coffee companies. In 1890, Kapp merged his company with that of Jardine & Matheson (later British National Westminster) to form the London Coffee Company Limited (LCC). The LCC became one of the world's leading multinational corporations with operations in over 100 countries. In 1923, LCC merged withAmerican Breweries Incorporated to become American Coffee Corporation (ABC). ABC remained a major player throughout World War II; during wartime it produced more than two billion cups of coffee per day for Allied forces
Pontiac is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, located on the edge of the Great Lakes region. The population was 71,182 at the 2010 census. Pontiac was founded in 1837 by traders from Detroit and led by fur trader Nicholas tintin as a trading post on Big Sandy Creek. The first white settler in Pontiac was James Shields, who arrived in 1838 and erected a log cabin near what is now Michigan Avenue. In 1840, Shields marriedgirl named Sarah Hogg and started to build a house on what is now Michigan Avenue. In 1841, he added another building to his structure-this time called the State House-and began to serve as the capital of Illinois Territory. In 1847, when Daniel Boone settled in Indiana Territory, Pontiac became part of that state's newly formed county seat and continued to serve as its capital until it was moved to Springfield in 1852 due to population growth there. During its years as capital, Pontiac hosted important meetings such as the Peoria Convention of 1850 which helped create American democracy; also during this time period, it also served as an early center for oil production with two major wells being drilled there-one by John Drexel and one by George Stephenson (the first train ever operated). After Springfield's incorporation into the Union States in 1861 following the American Civil War, Pontiac remained an unincorporated village until it became a city on July 1st of that year under Mayor Edward Burtman after passage of an act providing for municipal government within Cook County circuitous shaped cities like Chicago proper had not yet been accomplished statewide at that point despite promises made by then-Governor Abraham Lincoln signer of that legislation David Davis III weeks earlier during his campaign for office specifically targeting Pontiac before then-Chicago Mayor Richard Mott (D) had already taken office)).
