The Pontiac Army detachment was activated on November 8, 1862. The unit served in the Union army from its activation until it was disbanded on September 24, 1865. The detachment consists of soldiers who were mobilized for service in the Pontiac area. The first soldiers from Pontiac, Illinois were gathered together and deployed to the war effort on October 16, 1861. On that day, General George Halleck called for all men within three miles of Springfield to be mustered into military service. The purpose of this mobilization was to provide a force to protect the city during the early stages of the Civil War. As time passed and more units arrived in town, it became clear that an army detachment would not be possible to keep up with demand. So instead of calling upon men from our community to serve their country overseas, General Halleck authorized the formation of a company within the 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry ditto Company G (F). This company was organized on December 3rd and given orders to remain at home until needed again abroad or summoned back into action by order of General Halleck himself. This company proved itself as an invaluable asset when called upon by our government in 1863 and 1864 when they fought in various battles throughout Illinois which helped contribute greatly towards ending slavery in America once and for all. When regular troops were finally mustered into service on September 24th 1865 after years of preparation, this company also disbanding due to lack of replacements being available at no cost to our community or federal government alike!

By 1920, there were more than 1,000 residents living in Pontiac proper and some 640 residents living outside its limits on both sides of the Mississippi River. When World War II started, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered all American factories closed except for those providing essential war materials such as munitions and aluminum cans because they would "save American jobs." Thanks to Federal government policy which favored production over innovation during World War II – especially aluminum can manufacturing – Pontiac quickly emerged as one of America’s leading aluminum-producing communities; ranking second only to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania within that state alone! Post-war economic prosperity followed with prices for basic goods decreasing while output increased; creating what has been called “the golden age” for local aluminum production! However recent market conditions have again led to declines; culminating with today’s unfortunate situation where less than 10%of all finished products are exported!
