Plano is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas, United States. The population was 913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Plano was founded in 1911 as a small town on an agricultural cattle ranch by George Prentice and his wife, Lillian. The name Plano comes from "plano" (a type of rice) and "talo" (a type of wild turkey). In 1925, Prentice erected what is now known as the first commercial building in Plano. By 1930, when Plano's downtown core was built, it had become one of the most vibrant cities in Texas with over 1,000 businesses and 10,000 residents. In 1959, annexation by Arlington made Plano a city proper and its downtown became one of the busiest shopping areas in North Texas. In 2013-2014, Mayor Tom Landry approved plans to redevelop five properties adjacent to Cowboys Stadium into an $800 million mixed-use redevelopment project that would include more than 100 apartments, office buildings and hotel rooms; NFL football games; retail development including restaurants and bars; a stadium annexe providing parking for up to 60 thousand guests during events such as concerts or Finals Day game appearances; and a convention center capable of hosting up to 50 thousand visitors per year. The project would be financed through two rounds of public/private investment totaling $500 million over 25 years with no interest seekers allowed until 2021 due to concerns about traffic congestion on I-635 near campus during majorevents like Super Bowls or NBA Finals games. The City Council also approved zoning changes that will increase density for residential neighborhoods south of Interstate 635 from two homes per acre to six homes per acre within two years while limiting growth eastward from I-635 arterial roadway limits to single family homes only beginning in 2023. This new zoning will allow for 3200 additional housing units over 30 years without any need for rezoning or public hearings which will result in increased traffic congestion along I-635 corridor between Plano Campus & Interstate 635
