Plano, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,815. The city is on the west side of Chicago between Oak Lawn to the north and Wicker Park to the south. Plano, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Plano has been home to many businesses and families since it was founded by farmers in 1879 as a small community on the banks of the Mississippi River. The city grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to munitions plants and shipyards, and today it maintains a strong manufacturing base with a wide variety of companies including Koppers Co-operative Wholesale Grocery (KQG), Abbott Laboratories, Pianos Pizza & Pasta, Hormel Foods Corporation, Ford Motor Company and GE Aviation. The origin of Plano can be traced back to 1879 when farmsteads were established on the banks of the Mississippi River around what is now Downtown Plano. In 1907, an act was passed that renamed the town “Plano” after John Fenton Parkland who had donated land for the town center in that year. The first post office opened in 1908 under this name; however it closed in 1912 due to lack of mail service to rural areas across Cook County. One reason for this may have been because there was no railroad within 10 miles (16 km) of Plano which limited its growth during those early years. In 1915 an Act was passed allowing FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO BUY THE RUSSELL ROAD BUSINESS FROM THE MILITARY WELFARE COMPANY so PLANO could become one of their production sites located just outside Loop 610 South from 1915-1947 inclusive! During World War II Plano experienced rapid growth as munitions factories became operational nearby providing employment for both men and women alike. By 1945 over 60% of all payroll at Abbott Laboratories came from Plano! Today KQG continues to be one of Plano’s most successful commercial enterprises with nearly 350 employees including 40% owned by corporate headquarters themselves!
