The first settler in what would become Plainfield was James Wetherbee and his family who arrived on August 14, 1814 from Essex County, New York. The village was laid out by John Pritchard in 1834. In 1865, Plainfield became one of the townships of Chicago. On January 1, 1893 it merged with Park Ridge to form the city of Chicago. Stephenson was one of the original incorporators of what is now the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The first store in Plainfield opened on Main Street in 1830. In 1835, Abraham Lincoln moved to Plainfield from Davenport and established his home there.
