Plainfield was founded in 1837 by Joel Chandler Harris. The town was named after a small stream called theplain, which ran through it. The first post office was established in 1838. In 1840, the Illinois General Assembly authorized the construction of a canal linking Lake Michigan with the Mississippi River. The canal was built and finished in 1849, and Plainfield became one of its original municipalities. The first high school in Plainfield opened in 1868. It had a single room and taught grades 1-12. In 1916, Plainfield became a city and began to offer higher education opportunities to its citizens. In 1984, Plainfield approved an ordinance establishing a city hall and library system. The city later built two new libraries, one on Egan Ave., near downtown and one on Wacker Dr., east of Chicago's Loop Districts II and III. The population of Plainfield peaked at 381 residents per square mile in 1950; however, this number decreased over the next few decades as factories closed down or were moved out of town due to competition from other towns within Cook County including Skokie and Deer Park. By 1990, the population had fallen below 100 residents per square mile again; however, since then the population has increased slightly due to annexation by neighboring communities such as Downers Grove South (2010) or Mundelein (2015).
