Peoria, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Peoria County. The population was 93,827 at the 2010 census[1]. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Peoria were French missionaries in 1763 and they named it after Pierre-Charles de Marquette's village of Pekin on their trip across the Great Lakes. The site that became Peoria was founded by the Potawatomi tribe in 1811 as Point State Park[2]. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry brigade invaded Peoria and burned most of downtown before being driven back by Confederate forces under Nathan Bedford Forrest. The Battle for Peoria left four dead out of a total attack force estimated at over 100 soldiers[4]. Afterward, General James Mclntyre Butler ordered an investigation into what had happened and found that no blame could be found on any individual soldier or officer for what happened; this led to increased military activity around town which continued until about 1870 when troops withdrew from town due to lack of civilian support. In 1893, Pekin College moved from its original location northwest of downtown to its present location adjacent to Main Street just east of First Avenue; this made it possible for more students to study near downtown while also increasing business opportunities for both institutions.[5] In 1907 Radio Corporation International (RCI) began broadcasting from WGN-AM radio station with Edwin Armstrong transmitting hourly news bulletins beginning at 5 a.m.; this allowed residents in central and southwestern Illinois access to important national news events throughout the day.[6] On October 15, 1912 –independence Day –the city fathers dedicated Mount Pleasant Cemetery,[7] located east side between Third Street and Fourth Avenue near Roosevelt Boulevard; this cemetery contains burials dating back to 1839 including those of Abraham Lincoln and John Quincy Adams as well as numerous other notable Americans including statesman Daniel Webster,[8][9][10] Governor Simon Cameron (D), Mayor Proctor Jaffray (D)[11], physician Drs Samuel Morse Kilbourne & Augustus Kelley (Masons), Cyrus McCormick Sr., etc..
