Peoria, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Peoria County. As of 2010, the population was 97,521. The city is one of three original settlements in what would become Illinois, along with Bloomington and Chicago. Settlers had been moving westward from Kentucky and Ohio for years before 1815 when General James Kirks pushed his army into what is now Peoria County on August 17 to claim land for the United States as part of its western expansion. The first buildings were erected in this area around 1819 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had settled near Springfield, Illinois. In 1822, Peoria was incorporated as a town under the name "Aurora". The growth of Peoria began to accelerate after Congress created a territorial government for the new country at Fort Dearborn on December 6,1824. On January 1, 1830, Aurora became an incorporated village under the name "Peoria", while Dearborn remained an unincorporated community until it became one of two cities within Cook County on November 3,1830. The arrival of railroad transportation made Peoria even more important; on March 4, 1840 Union Pacific Railroad reached Aurora with its first trainload of passengers; by 1865 railroads had consisting over 100 businesses here serving a population then estimated at just 725 people Outfitting shops rapidly replaced buggies and wagons as modeof travel to markets supplied by farmers grown crops raised near sites such as this one
