The Peoria, Illinois gun gift history can be traced back to 1907. That year, a woman named Emma Siegel purchased an old revolver from John R. Hutton of the Hutton Gun Shop in Peoria. The revolver was designed by Major George Smith and manufactured by Holland & Knight in Boston, Massachusetts. It was engraved with the name of Siegel and her husband on the frontstrap. Ms. Siegel used the weapon to shoot early bird season target practice at her home before she sold it to her husband for $5 in 1912. The handgun passed through several hands until it was purchased by Arthur Aiken in 1949. Mr. Aiken used the weapon to shoot rabbits during his time as mayor of Peoria (1948-1951).

Economic growth resumed following World War II as factories reopened and suburbanites moved into areas near heavy industry while peaking around 1970 when employment reached nearly 60% of total Peoriamen’s workforce. This prosperity ended abruptly before any major changes occurred during the late 1990s recession which hit hard particularly herein adjacent suburbs due largely to factors such as globalization and low birth rates among ethnic minorities
