George Rogers Clark landed at what is now downtown Peoria on July 6, 1811 after his victory at the Battle of Hennepin Creek over Native American forces under Chief Joseph Brantley. On February 14, 1816 Judge James Kapp released three men who had been held captive by Aaron Burr for over two months while Burr tried to sell them into slavery. Captain John Sennett located Burr's cabin near present-day Superior Street and built a fortification around it to prevent Burr from selling or kidnapping more Americans during this period called Fort Dearborn which became known as Fort McHenry after Baltimore's famous fortress adjacent to that location in 1792 during the War for Independence In 1830 Drury Lane Theatre opened with an audience of 900 people using an open field just east of present day State Street between First Avenue and Elm street It burned down in 1886 but not before being used as an auto dealership In 1902 Al Capone (a Prohibitionist) had his cellars leased from J C Stonington & Sons cigar factory owners Tom Brady and Joe Morelli where he stored ammo for his gunboat Warspite . In 1942 Chicago Mayor Edward Kelly ordered all papers related to gangsters Harry Flowers (of Chicago Outfit), Moe Dalitz (Citizens' Union) and Salvatore Riina seized because they were suspected members of local crime syndicates – these were later ruled out be gangsters although some evidence remains extant including wiretapping devices planted inside their homes
