Pekin is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Pekin post office was established in 1835 and discontinued operations in 1975. Pekin takes its name from Chief Pekiun (or Pequon) of the Potawatomi Tribe and his village near present day Pekin. In 1836, John Fenton founded the first school in what is now Pekin with instruction in reading, writing, arithmetic and other basic skills for teachable children. In 1842 John Fenton built a log courthouse located on the east side of Main Street which served as the town hall until destroyed by fire in 1865. A second courthouse was built on West State Street between Broadway and First Avenue circa 1880-1881 but this building also burned down within 10 years of its erection; it remains unoccupied to this day. A third courthouse was built on West State Street between First Avenue and Broadway circa 1913-1914 but it also burned down during World War I; it still stands today as a storage shed used by local farmers. In 1925-1926, an addition to the original three blocks square block structure east of Main Street was constructed including a $1 million dollar bank which served as one of two banks in town for over ninety years until closed by BankAmerica Corporation in 2006 after being acquired by OneWest Financial Corporation.; The bank'shistoric landmark has since been restored to its pre-bankruptcy condition crime scene role as part of development plans for Pekin's revitalization project initiated by Mayor Marty Quinn following the sale of BankAmerica Corporation to OneWest Financial Corporation., Today there are only two businesses remaining inside that once boasted more than 60 storefront locations: The Kwik Shop & Grill on North First Avenue across from Central High School serves primarily fast food while Artspace Gallery features art exhibitions throughout the year both indoors and outdoors featuring local artists such as landscape painters Ann Loyeau and Donato Giannone.; With just over 2,000 residents living within 5 miles (8 km) radius outside of downtown/the central business district - making it one of smallest townships or villages in Illinois - much work needs to be done if any sort further revitalization efforts are going to take hold; especially given that less than 1 percent (0.0001%)of all economic activity occurring within 5 miles (8 km) radius outside DowntownChicago occurs withinVillage limits
