Pekin, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first known settlers in Pekin were two families from Connecticut who arrived in 1795. They named their settlement "New Canaan." Pekin was platted as a town on December 13, 1834 by James Kellar and George Neely. The first post office was established at Pekin on November 15, 1836. In 1871, John Fenton founded the Joplin & St Louis Railroad which ran through Pekin and Joplin to Rock Island. In 1872, he built a depot at what is now corner of Main and College Streets. In 1893, the Chicago Northwestern Railway came through Pekin and built its line to Joliet just north of town line; this made it possible for people west of the river to get goods delivered directly to their homes without having to go through Joliet or other cities. The population of Pekin declined after World War II until it peaked at 7,853 in 1990 before declining again until 2000 when it reached 5,711 according to the 2010 census estimate

He founded what would become known as Carver City on the east side of the Chicago River. From here he started to sell his products - mainly cotton - to local farmers and consumers across Illinois and beyond. By 1895, Pekin had reached its peak as an industrial center with over 100 businesses employing more than 2,000 people. However, World War I destroyed much of Pekin's economic power; after the war it fell into decline until becoming an again major urban center only later experiencing a brief resurgence during postwar prosperity (1948-1954). The post-war period also saw significant changes take place within both Pekin itself and its surrounding community which had grown up around it since1893: pneumatic tube transportation replaced horse carriages on main streets while expressways connected various parts of town; two major shopping malls were built near downtown – one called “The Forum” (now part of Oriental Plaza) and another called “Stadium Place” (now part of Century Center mall); among other developments were new schools such as K–12 public school buildings erected at some points along Wabash Avenue between State Road 612nd Street and West First Street; these buildings remain some of today's most iconic architecture within their respective neighborhoods today;[fn 1] Finally racial discrimination against African Americans decreased following passage of federally mandated anti-discrimination laws throughout most Midwest cities during this time period including those located within Cook County.[fn 2] Today redevelopment continues with mixed use projects such as One Park Plaza being constructed adjacent to Millennium Park with plans for additional retail/office space nearby.[fn 3]
