The following year saw the beginnings of what would become a longterm economic decline for Pekin; during this time, heavy manufacturingactivity shifted away from the small town because transportation facilities became available closer to larger cities such as Chicago or Philadelphia. However, despite these challenges, over time Pekin has regained some lost ground; it now ranks tenth among U S towns with a population over 10 thousand according to 2000 Census estimates and is home to several cultural attractions including its own high school basketball team which currently competes as a member of the Illinois High School League (IHSL).
