Pekin is a small village in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,311 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. By 1860, there were 30 homes, 20 businesses, 10 schools and five hospitals within the town limits—a single municipality totaling more than 2,000 people! During Wabash Railroad construction across central Illinois during the late 1840s & 1850s several villages were abandoned as their sites became railroad yards or sawmill towns – including Pekin which successfully resisted demolition but lost its status as a municipality when rail lines arrived nearby In 1959 Pekin amalgamated with neighboring villages of White Oak Township (to the east) & Addison Township (to the south) forming Sangamon County’s only township form that time frame… The merger created 3 new wards which are Cook (westernmost), Willard (easternmost), & Park View/Haleyville (central). The name “Pekin” originated from Greek mythology where Peisistratus' daughter Pipernée married king Aeacus because she could not bear him any children - he had been given her three suitors but she refused each one!
