Pekin, Illinois is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 6,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Pekin was founded in 1847 by Elisha Peck and others as a post office on the site of what is now known as Clinton Park. The original name of the village was "Granite City". In 1868, Pekin became one of thirty-six townships in McHenry County and were organized into two wards. On November 3, 1888, Pekin had its first election to a Town Council which consisted of six members with three seats up for election every four years. One seat remained vacant for over twenty years until it was filled by Edwin Dyer who also served on the Village Board from 1917 to 1933 and 1945 to 1951 Pekingen's first post office opened in 1865 under the name "Draper". In 1886, John Fenton built a sawmill on the east side of Main Street which became known as Fenton's Mill. The community began to grow rapidly thanks to its agricultural production and many new homes were built during this time including Gable House (now an annexe to Victoria Hall), White House (now used as an apartment building), Hickory Hill (later renamed Forest Hills) and Elmhurst Place. By 1895, when Pekin had a population of 785 residents, it had become home to several churches including First Presbyterian Church (founded in 1864), Methodist Episcopal Church (1886) and Baptist church (1892). A schoolhouse called Zion United Methodist School opened in 1898 which soon became too large for the surrounding farmlands so it was converted into an apartment building named Davenport Place where today’s Home Depot is located. In 1905–1906, Pekingen started construction on what would become their first shopping center when they purchased land at Goodyear Road and Pulaski Street from CTA President George Pullman Sr.. The center originally consisted only of five storefronts but quickly grew into what is now known as one of Chicagos most iconic malls with more than 1 million square feet floor space . After years of planning and fundraising by Mayor Frank Jankowski and his predecessor Samuel Ziegler Jr., Pekingen completed their shopping center project on May 24th, 1968 – just weeks before Chi-town celebrated its 250th anniversary! The mall continued to grow throughout the 1970s with expansions into other businesses such as Sears & Roebuck Catalog stores while also adding more variety like movie theaters , restaurants ,(which included Pizza Hut ), bowling alleys ,and even a tennis court . During this time period there were also efforts made by developers such as Harry Cohen who unsuccessfully attempted To purchase all or nearly all acres adjacent to I-95 southbound between Hoyt Avenue/Lake Shore Drive & Racine Avenue/ Sterling Heights Road; however these plans never came true due primarily because wealthy Chicagoans did not want competition within their city limits In 1992–1993 retail store anchor Jamba Juice Corporation moved out after 20 years being headquartered across from Big Macland across from Sears Tower; becoming instead one half ownership stakeholder with McCormick & Co., owner jointly represented by Weil Gotshal & Mandel LLP which leased back then both buildings next door [ latterly occupied by Hostess].
