Pekin, Illinois is a small town in the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 12,651 at the 2010 census. Pekin is located on the banks of the Peoria River near the southern edge of Cook County. The first settler in what became Pekin was John Doane in 1837. Doane and his family moved to this location from a farm one mile east of Pekin on October 10, 1837. They were among the first families to live in what would become Pekin Township. In 1842, Edward Mclntyre purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land along the river and named it "Meadowbrook." He built a house there which still stands today and used it as his home until his death in 1868. His son-in-law David Henshaw took over management of Meadowbrook until 1861 when he sold it to Samuel Beal who renamed it "Peking." Beal also built a house there which still stands today. In 1865, Elisha Goodrich established a gristmill here which continued operation until 1907 when it was destroyed by fire. Goodrich's grandson, Charles Tilton Goodrich, donated all of his gristmill equipment and building materials to Pekin Township for use as a library during its early years. The township hall was also constructed from these materials in 1918-1920. In 1923, Goodrich Elementary School opened its doors; however, school never grew beyond that initial capacity because parents preferred their children attend nearby institutions such as Roosevelt High School or Wabash Junior College instead due to their proximity to downtown Chicago). In 1927 (just two years after becoming part of Cook County), Peking Township absorbed part of neighboring West Side Township into its borders creating what is now known as North Park Center District No 2 (North Park Center being then known only as South Side Road). With this change came an increase in population with new homes being erected along with businesses such as grocery stores and restaurant fillups becoming more common than ever before during this time period thanks to post World War II boosters looking for economic development opportunities within easy reach for their constituents! During this time period too many residents decided they would rather live closer together so they formed village forms where each individual member contributed towards shared expenses like streetscaping or getting trash picked up etcetera without having any say whatsoever about how things were done or didn't go according to their agenda/vision! After much discussion between various township officials and citizens alike amending zoning regulations were finally put into place effective February 1st 1928 allowing businesses within town limits “to carry on any business operations whatever neglecting any other considerations” while ensuring that all residences within town limits had access to reasonable public services regardless whether those services occurred inside or outside town boundaries! This ordinance allowed for larger businesses such as supermarkets and restaurants (+6 stories+) serving customers from both inside & outside townslimits while maintaining selective zoning controls granting businesses specific uses ie: residential areas could not be developed without prior approval from proper authorities) thus fulfilling one half of Mayor Jaffe's original vision called "The Retail District" - retail activity taking center stage while keeping important municipal services available at all times! As mentioned earlier some residents decided that living too close together made life difficult enough already +1schools+1library=1problem right? So starting back around 1948 when zoning regulations officially changed again allowing apartments/condos (+3 stories+) +/-3stories=4problems began popping up left & right!! Just think about all those buildings we've added onto since then including 3 high schools+2 libraries+ countless other commercial buildings...all without ever mentioning ANY OF IT TO THE BUSINESS OWNERS OR CITIZENS THEY ARE RESPECTING!!!! Pekin is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 5,713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint Hills region. Pekin is first mentioned in an 1824 deed by Captain George Stephenson and his party on their way to survey land west of Detroit. The name means "eastern seen" or "site where the Eastern Red Cedar trees grow." The community began as a small post office called Starbuck in 1836. In 1847, Pekin became one of five towns consolidated into what is now Lansing Township. Pekin's history begins with its location on the Michigamie River, which gave it easy access to trade with the surrounding area. The town developed around two railroads that brought goods and passengers to and from Michigan City, Indiana on the Chicago & Northern Railroad and Detroit & Toledo Railway. One of these rails was named after Pekin's then-chief justice, John Fenton, who helped coordinate these activities. The early settlers were farmers who grew corn and wheat for local markets; they also raised hogs, cows, chickens, pigs and horses for local use or sale to other residents or businesses. By 1830 there were about fifty people living in Pekin; by 1840 there were over two hundred residents hereabouts. A store opened in 1839 which served as a center for local trading until 1850 when a new courthouse was built downtown. During World War I (1914-18), Pekin experienced some significant growth due to its proximity to Stilwell Field Ammunition Plant near Battle Creek and its ability to ship munitions through Lake Huron before reaching Allied forces fighting on the Western Front including General Pershing’s First American Army during World War I. After 1918 came Prohibition which had a significant impact on business activity within Pecksniff Township but did not have any lasting effect elsewhere in Michigan Territory because liquor sales continued uninterrupted even following prohibition nationwide beginning January 1st 1919 In 1936 township trustees voted unanimously to annex Starbuck Township due largely to increased population density concentrated along three main arterial streets: Main Street (now Gratiot Avenue), Sherman Avenue (now State Street) and Clinton Avenue (now Ottawa Boulevard). At that time total township population stood at 6057 while Starbuck had only 2 dwellings; however Starbucks annexation created an additional 1270 individuals residing within township limits making it one of Michigan’s largest consolidated communities outside Flint Hills .
