The Coast Guard has been in operation in Pekin, Illinois since 1887. At that time, the town had a single lighthouse which was used for warning people of danger on the coasts of Lake Michigan and the Straits of Mackinac. In 1915, Pekin became part of the newly created city of Chicago. The Coast Guard decided to keep their lighthouse in use here, however, it was decommissioned in 1948 and donated to the City of Chicago. It was then used as a public library until 2001 when it was transferred back to the City of Pekin and is now housed inside the old post office building located at 5th Street and LaSalle Avenue. In 1987, Mayor Tom Daley presented a gift from his father-in-law, Richard J. Daley Sr., who had served as Commissioner on the Coast Guard's Atlantic Fleet during World War II. The gift included a new $228 million dollar warship named after him called "Daley" which will be stationed off Illinois' coast. This giftmarked an important milestone for the Coast Guard and helped make Pekin one of its most active ports along with Rockford and Racine Indiana
