Pekin, Illinois is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,783 at the 2010 census. The village of Pekin was incorporated in 1857 and was named for the Pekin family. Pekinstown is located in the center of the village. Peakin"s post office opened on December 14, 1858, and closed on July 26, 1959. Peakin had a population of 564 as of the 2000 census. It has since shrunk to just over 100 residents. The Village of Pekin was incorporated as a village on December 14th 1857 by order of then-President James Kappler with 727 residents voting in favor. It was given its name from one of the original families who settled there including John Pekin and his wife Sarah (née Goodyear). In 1870 when it became an unincorporated community it had 8 households and held $5 worth of property valued at $25 dollars per acre which only amounted to 0.035% or $1 out of total assessed valuation for all tracts within the community limits at that time! In 1975-1976 when new township map boundaries were created much larger than what existed when incorporation occurred; much smaller villages were annexed into Township 2 north thereof including many homes located closer to Interstate 69/I-635 exits than their previous home near downtown Peakin’s limits making it difficult for any one resident or business owner to maintain more than about 50 acres surrounding their properties without becoming annexed into another municipality; so soon after incorporation many businesses closed down because annexation prices ranged anywhere from 3x - 10x greater than normal township tax rates usually charged! It should be noted that current day Township 2 contains almost all former Village land annexation prices have increased significantly reflecting increasing demand attributable primarily to development along I-69 corridor between Chicago and Springfield creating more jobs while bypassing smaller townsfolk dependent upon agriculture not only providing employment but also affordable housing & services essential for everyday life such as water & sewer service

Pekin is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,876 at the 2010 census. Pekin was founded in 1837 by John Jacob Astor and his family as an encampment on the north side of the Kankakee River. The name "Pekin" comes from an Algonquian word meaning "place where the sun shines." Pekin was originally part of what was known as French Township (later Scott Township). On July 1, 1847, it became a part of Illinois Colony No. 3 under Order in Council No. 1092. In 1853 it became a part of Mount Prospect Township. On November 15, 1865, it became a part of Kane County when that county was formed from parts of Cook and McLean Counties. At its incorporation as a town, Pekin had a population of 10 residents; by 1860 it had grown to 22 residents. The first post office in Pekin opened on May 6, 1846; it ceased operation on December 14th due to low mail traffic. The first store open in town was the Store & Hotel on Main Street; this business closed after only one year because of financial difficulties brought about by war fever which had reached Illinois during that time period across the border in Mexico City. A new store opened on October 1st 1870 at 501 East State Street and continued operations until 1906 when it burned down due to arson by local teenagers who also destroyed several other stores around town over time including one built within view of the old post office building which still stands today adjacent to Interstate 80 just south of Pekin High School making it one stop for tourists visiting our small community since 1909! In 1904-1906 there were two hotels/stores located inside and just outside downtown Pekin Limits while another store - unknown - operated out front until 1906 when arson destroyed both buildings leaving only the foundations standing today! In 1911 there were three stores but all were closed before Christmas due to prohibition which took effect Texas style then moving into full force nationally soon afterwards! In 1916-1917 there were six stores with four located downtown while one store operated out front until 1918 when fire destroyed both buildings once again leaving only foundations standing today... Finally starting in 1922 we have just two stores remaining now with limited hours operation each day except for special events like Oktoberfest or Christmas Day! In 1937 John Jacob Astor donated land near present day Central Park for what would become Stonington Hills Hospital complete with its own operating room and addition for maternity care facilities providing early forms of prenatal healthcare to area women up until World War II when most all such care moved away from America into much more developed countries due to political correctness!! And so ends my little overview about Pekiing history beginning back before white men even set foot here!!!
