Park Ridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Park Ridge is located on the edge of the city of Chicago and can be seen as one of its boundaries. The first settler in Park Ridge was Anthony Burns who platted what would become Park Ridge in 1836. At that time there were only six families living in what is now Park Ridge. By 1860 there were over 100 residents and by 1870 it had grown to over 1,000 people. In 1872, John Dolan founded the Dolan Creamery which still exists today and has been a part of the community for over eighty years. He also helped found both park rangers (now called police officers) and baseball teams which have continued to play in Parkridge since its founding. In 1907, Mrs Clara Barton donated land to create a public park that would serve as an open-air market place for all citizens of Cook County free from charge. Park Ridge, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It was founded in 1868 by Levi Park and his wife Eliza. The population of Park Ridge at the 2010 census was 7,643. The Town of Park Ridge was created on April 22, 1868 from parts of the Township of Chicago Heights. On November 3, 1871, the Town received its charter from the State of Illinois. In 1902 Park Ridge annexed part of North Side Township which made it a total of 11 townships. In 1908 an addition to the town name was given when it became known as "Township Road" 25-8-2 to honor General James Halleck who had been Commandant and Superintendent at Fort Dearborn before he served as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War and then Mayor of Chicago Heights before becoming President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary for Reconstruction during the American Civil War (1865-1869). On January 1st, 1912 Park Ridge became a city with a population over 10,000 people under its jurisdiction as well as other municipalities within Cook County with populations over 10K like Skokie and Lake Forest Village which were incorporated into City limits on December 5th that year after years anticipation and delay due to county statute limitations on incorporation into cities without first obtaining proper platting permits from their respective county governing bodies which only allowed for villages or towns with less than 10K residents while Cities were limited to having a population over 25K at that time so City Limits could be changed without prior board approval thereby expanding City Limit boundaries while still adhering to county statuteslimitations otherwise City Limits would have increased Enumeration Districts Within Cities Which Would Have Made It Harder To Keep Up With Population Growth And So On). This process whereby newly formed cities are authorized by village or township boards through legislation rather than being granted plats/patents/incorporation certificates by respective governing bodies is known as Charter Amendment proceedings where successive communities within samecounty pass ordinances authorizing them directly rather then waiting for their respective county governing bodies which can often be slow To act upon these petitions since there may be several communities vying For Same privileges & rights & expansion potential As Their predecessor Communities Which Can Cause Discord & Conflict) .
The first permanent settler in Park Ridge was Elias Conger, who arrived in 1812. The town was platted in 1827 and named after General Jonathan Kellogg, the founder of Kellogg's Mills. The population increased rapidly during the 1830s as farmers moved into the area from Illinois and Indiana. By 1840, Park Ridge had a population of over 300 people. In 1847, the village became a school district and by 1860 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1865, Park Ridge voters passed a resolution to annex more land east of the tracks to make up for lost acres when Chicago annexed the city. This annexation created much controversy because many residents in Park Ridge felt they were being taken advantage of by Chicago. The town remained an independent municipality until it merged with Cook County on January 1, 1893.
