Park Ridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,707 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Park Ridge is located on the north side of Chicago and is bordered by Hinsdale to the east and Westchester to the south. The first settler in what would become Park Ridge was James Hickey in 1835. He and his family moved from New York City to a tract of land that they named after their husbands, George Washington Hickey and Nicholas Baker Hickey. Park Ridge was platted in 1858 by General John Prentice with lots that were subdivided into blocks. The village had one schoolhouse and 14 homes. The first post office opened in 1860, but it closed due to lack of customers. The first store opened in 1865 as J & G Smith's grocery store which continued until 1924 when it became Davenport Drug Store Inc.. In 1886, James Kapp built Kapp's Mill on the site of what would become Kapp's Bakery later renamed Parkridge Millshops Inc.. In 1912, Harry Silliman purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land adjacent to present-day North Avenue for $10,000 (). This parcel would become known as "Silliman Forest". Silliman began developing this land into annexation properties for park development; eventually he donated 1/4 million acres (0 hectare) to the city of Chicago for use as parkland over thirty years (). On October 2nd, 1998 (the day after aging former Mayor Richard Mangel died), Mayor Richard Mangel dedicated 1/2 mile (1 kilometer) of Michigan Avenue between Randolph Street and South Shore Drive within Park Ridge boundaries as Richard Mangel Parkway (). This remains one of only two streets or driveways dedicated specifically within city limits outside downtown Chicago () – also honoring former Cook County Treasurer Dick Simpson () who also served as mayor from 1997-2001(). Park Ridge was founded in 1848 by John and Jane Park. The city of Chicago annexed the town in 1898, making it a part of the city. The population of Park Ridge peaked at 20,000 in 1920, but declined to 11,000 by 1940. In that year, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that black Americans were not allowed to attend public schools in American cities. This led to a increase in white flight from the city, and Park Ridge became a largely white community. However, over time its demographics have changing again with an increasing number of African Americans living there. In recent years, Park Ridge has seen some revitalization with efforts to attract businesses and new residents.
Park Ridge is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. Park Ridge was originally named after General Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel Robeson Grant. It was platted in 1847 by John T. Woodruff and James Dickey. In 1856, the name of the village changed to Park City because General James K. Polk visited Park Ridge while on a tour of Illinois and saw that it would be an ideal site for a military post. The first post office was established in 1861 in what is now the Village Hall Annex building. Park City absorbed portions of neighboring townships around 1904-1905 as part of a larger annexation plan by Cook County officials to increase its size and importance within the county as a whole. In 1916, when World War I began, Park Ridge joined with other small villages along the north side of Chicago to form Wauconda Township; this move increased its social and economic ties with nearby cities such as Chicago Heights, Northbrook, Riverwest and Maywood which had all been growing rapidly during wartime stimulus programs meant to revive agriculture in Illinois following Prohibition). On July 15th 1930 voters approved an amendment to their charter which granted self-government status to Village residents over Township residents (this arrangement continued until 1978). In 1951 annexation of parts of Riverwest gave Park City its present boundaries; these changes followed annexation of adjacent Glenview Township (now Plainfield) in 1955-1957 through what has been called "the largest unauthorized annexation in Cook County history". On November 3rd 1959 Mayor Ed Koch announced that park city would be renamed "Ridgefield", after one of his ancestors who had settled thereabouts more than 100 years earlier. This change took effect on April 1st 1960 although some old signage still remains reading "Park Ridges". As early as 1928 efforts were being made by then-Mayor Tom Bradley—a Democrat—to develop what became known as Roosevelt Road into an arterial street connecting downtown Chicago with neighborhoods east and west of First Baptist Church on State Street between Wilson Boulevard and Lake Shore Drive/Garland Avenue (later Loop Rd.). With increasing development within both park city limits paralleling Roosevelt Road commercial activity grew along with zoning restrictions forbidding residential development near commercial areas becoming increasingly difficult to overcome given burgeoning suburban populations expanding beyond traditional agricultural boundaries throughout much southern Cook County
