The first white settlement in Park Ridge was a group of men who set up a farm on the east bank of the Chicago River in 1847. The Farmington Company, which included George Washington Morrison and his brother Amos, became one of the largest landholders in Park Ridge. The Morrions were among the earliest settlers and they soon started to build themselves a comfortable home. They also started out as fairly typical American farmers, growing corn, wheat, beans and potatoes. However, over time they began to adopt some European-style ways of living that made them quite different from their neighbors. For example, Amos Morrison started wearing clothes and having servants instead of farmhands. This change led to friction with some of his fellow colonists because it caused him to become more expensively dressed than other people and he didn't share equally in the proceeds from their crops or livestock sales. In 1872, when Illinois was admitted into the Union as a state, Park Ridge became part of Cook County. As part of this new government structure, Park Ridge's central business district—known then as "the Ville"—was established within what is now Loop 90th Street/Milwaukee Avenue north of State Street in Chicagoland. The Ville had several important landmarks including the first city hall (1875), fire station (1890), police department (1905) and grocery store (1910).
