The Coast Guard in Park Forest, Illinois began its history as a small auxiliary unit of the Chicago Fire Department. The first Captains were Wm. A. Hardesty and F. H. Cousins, who served from 1892 to 1897; Captain J. P. Stevens served from 1898 to 1902; Captain Denton Ladd served from 1903 to 1907; Captain Luther Crouch serving from 1908 to 1911; Captain Swayne Mims serving from 1912 to 1916 In 1917, the Coast Guard was redesignated as the Park Forest Coast Guard Station and changed its name to Park Forest Coast Guard Base on July 1st, 1917 In 1940, the United States government merged the Chicago Fire Department with the United States Naval Reserve and activated the Park Forest Squadron (later renamed Harbor Patrol) under Commanding Officer Fred Cone On October 4th, 1941 – less than one year after World War II ended – USS Constitution (CV-5) arrived at Pier 41 in downtown Chicago loaded with more than 2,000 men and women of various branches of service who had been mobilized for war purposes Conducting a day-long welcoming ceremony aboard Constitution were Rear Admiral Harry Ewing (USN), Commander Edward J. King (USN), Air Commodore Hoyt Vandenberg (USAAF), Rear Admiral John Slessor (USN) and Mayor Richard J. Daley Commandant Amory Posthumus became First Lieutenant of Harbor Patrol Squadron One on October 5th On December 10th USS Constitution departed Pier 41 for her last wartime tour of duty in support of Allied forces in North Africa during Operation Torch Captain Luther Crouch passed away on November 25th at his home in Appleton, Wisconsin after a long illness

Oak Park, Illinois is a small town in the eastern part of the state of Illinois. The population was 25,546 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west bank of the Chicago River, between Rockford and Aurora. The village was first settled by German immigrants in 1837. The name Oak Park comes from a grove of oak trees that were found near where it now stands. In 1859, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech here on behalf of then-newly admitted Kansas into the Union as part of Missouri. In 1867, Oak Park became an incorporated village and adopted its present name. Its citizens voted to erect a municipal building in honor of George Washington Carver (1881–1974), one of America's most significant farmers and educators. Carver had been born in nearby Jacksonville, Illinois, and moved to Oak Park with his family when he was five years old. He began working on his father's farm as a boy and later became involved with local politics and business affairs. After becoming presidentially elected as a Democrat in 1938, Carver devoted himself to community service through public works programs such as creating new parks and playgrounds for children throughout the cityscape; developing new crops for local markets;and sponsoring educational scholarships for needy students from low-income families
