Park Forest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 912 at the 2010 census. Park Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and was founded in 1881 as a small farming community. It became a city in 1903 and remains one today. The Village of Park Forest was organized on February 26, 1881 when three hundred people from various villages within Cook County met to create the new village. The name of the original town founders were John A. Richardson and his sons Isaac and Augustus Richardson; these men had Homestead No. 2 in what is now Park Forest Township on their farmstead-now known as Richardson Road West-from which they marketed their products to other farmers throughout Cook County. In 1892, when Chicago became an independent city, Park Forest became its first municipality with a vote by its citizens voting against annexation by the City of Chicago because they felt that it would have increased taxes too much for them alone. In 1902, after years of planning and construction by local residents spearheaded by Mayor Edward Hutton (whose father also founded Park Forest), City Hall finally located what would become downtown Park Forest at Harrison Street and Kedzie Avenue between Ashland Avenue (then called Michigan) and Harlem Avenue on evidence that this site had been underutilized for decades due to its high cost of living compared to nearby communities such as Lincolnwood or North Side which were burgeoning cities with larger populations at that time. Downtown Park forest quickly emerged as one of Chicagos most vibrant areas with businesses like Sears Roebuck & Company opening up along Harrison Street while politicians like Mayor Hutton lobbied for more development in downtown park forest which eventually led to the incorporation of several other municipalities within Cook County including Logan Square (1909), NW Side (1920), North Side (1927), Wellesley Heights (1929)and Merchandise Mart Plaza(1937). In 1951, following annexation by Lakeview Heights according to then Municipal Code section 15-8-1 et seq., Downtown ParkForest again experienced rapid growth with many new businesses being opened up including Wrigley's Field where modern day Cubs playing baseball began play in 1914; Armoury Place where later American Eagle Outfitters stores were established; Pritzker Pavilion featuring Art Deco architecture; State Fairgrounds housing both the Illinois State Fairgrounds Auditorium/Wells Fargo Arena from 1925 until 1977 when it was replaced by McCormick Place ; Danforth Place featuring Beaux Arts architecture dating back to 1909 among others . Downtown PARK FOREST reached its peak population count during World War II with over 1,500 people employed mainly through patriotic wartime production operations such as munitions factories while also hosting major events like Soldier's Day Parade 1915 & 1917 leading up to America's entry into World War II During periods past mayoral administrations have included Harold Washington who served two terms beginning on January 3rd 1969 thru December 31st 1973 making him officeholder number 5th longest serving mayor ever elected in Cook County history before he stepped down effective December 31st 1973 becoming executive director of government relations for Ford Motor Company predecessor National Steel Works Cities Services Incorporation however he never ran for reelection continuing his long legacy behind closed doors politics within city hall remaining largely unmentioned outside urban circles beyond occasional articles about interesting business deals he’s involved in or how “Ford Nation” changed neighborhood boundaries
The Park Forest area was once part of the Township of Cook, in the general area now known as Aurora. The first European to visit Park Forest was Giovanni da Vergato in 1534 and he named it after his patron saint, Saint Patrick. In 1795, a group of farmers from Palatine County donated land to the township for a public square. The first park in Park Forest was created on this square byordering Pioneers to clearland and build a grassy mound for their use. On July 4th, 1836, President James K. Polk signed legislation creating the Illinois State Fairgrounds at what is now Wabash Avenue and Sangamon Street in Park Forest. This site served as the fairground until 1933 when it was moved to Springfield because of World War II bombings. On October 25th, 1932, Mayor John J. McMahon dedicated the new State Capitol Building at 115 West Washington Street in Park Forest along with several other buildings in town during an event billed as "the biggest civic occasion ever staged here". In 1954-1955, Park Forests saw its first hockey game when Lake Michigan's McCormick Ice Arena became available for use as a park during Chicago's ice season. The following year saw the opening of Chicago's only outdoor swimming pool -700 South Dearborn Street - making it one of the most popular park features for bathing lovers around since its inauguration date (June 1st). In 1978-1979, new athletic fields were built adjacent to McCormick Ice Arena which would later become home to Northwestern Illinois University Wildcats men’s soccer team and women’s volleyball team among others before closing down due to budget cuts in 1999 ADVERTISEMENT .
