In 1916, the Park Forest Air Force Base was established and it served as the air force’s hub for planes and supplies. From here, pilots could fly to bases in other states to fight in World War I. The base also played an important role during World War II by providing fighter planes and bombers to the Allied Forces. Park Forest is a small town in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,157 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Park Forest was founded on April 12, 1847, by John Hargrave and his wife Lucy Hargrave. The community was named after John's father-in-law, Nicholas Park. The first school in Park Forest opened in May 1847. In 1865, the first Baptist church in Park Forest was built. In 1898, a post office called Park Forest was established; it closed in 1901. In 1907, a sawmill was built on Railroad Road near present day Roosevelt Road to produce lumber for local homes and businesses. The mill continued into the late 20th century as Wellston Lumber Company until it went out of business in 1990. In 1955, an Air Force base called Fort Sheridan opened within walking distance of the town center; it served as a training ground for many American military personnel during World War II and later became home to numerous civilian agencies including Chicago police and fire departments before its closure in 2006. In 1961, both schools that were originally located around the bend from where I-55 now splits were razed to make way for new housing development which would create one of Chicagoland's largest neighborhoods known as "The Loop". This neighborhood has since been largely replaced by newer developments with few remaining trees or evidence of what once occurred thereabouts such as Hargrave Elementary School which still stands today adjacent to Interstate 55 between Elmhurst Avenue and Harrison Boulevard across from McCormick Place mall (formerly Sears). However some Original Oak Street Homes remain extant currently used by private citizens who maintain them as property values have increased significantly nearby making this neighborhood more desirable than ever before!

Park Forest, Illinois was one of the first towns in the area that was given to the United States by France in 1803. The town was named for Colonel John Park, who donated land to the United States. The town soon grew and became a prosperous community, with a post office, store, and school. In 1834, Park Forest was renamed Chicago. The town continued to grow and prosper until the Great Depression hit Illinois in 1929. At that time, Chicago's economy went into freefall and many businesses closed their doors. However, Park Forest managed to stay afloat thanks to its strong social fabric and its citizens' dedication to their community. After the depression ended in 1933, Park Forest regained its former prosperity as it began to attract new businesses and residents. Today, Park Forest is one of Chicago's most vibrant communities with a rich history that can be experienced today through its lively streetscape and cultural attractions.
The Park Forest community was located in northeastern Illinois on the border of Cook County and Will County. The area was first settled by the Kankakee and Huron tribes, who named it after a large forest near their village. In 1814, General James H. Wilson purchased 5,000 acres of land at Park Forest for $1,200 from the Kankakee tribe. Wilson used the land for grazing and planted crops, which helped to create a successful agricultural society in Park Forest. In 1828, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of America and travelings occurred throughout his country in search of knowledge about new lands to be explored. He met with representatives from various Native American communities before traveling to Illinois to inspection the land there. After his visit, he recommended that Illinois become a state and appointed John P. Morrill as its first governor. In 1836, Abraham Lincoln became assassinated in Dallas, Texas while attending a political rally and Columbus Grove Cemetery is named in his honor. A number of businesses were established within Park Forest during its early years including Wabash Navigation Company (1830-1911), Larkin & Co (1835-1900), Phelps Dodge Mining Company (1838-1920) - both founded by George Cushing - Sears & Roebuck (1846-1913), Jardine Matheson Paper Mill (1857-) and Union Carbide Corporation (1920-) which built one of the largest chemical plants ever constructed on American soil outside Detroit Michigan originally called Campagene Chemical Works but changed their name to Union Carbide Corp when it moved into its new facility at River Rouge in 1926
